Do I need a new VGA card

I have a radeon HD6800 4GB Hawk VGA card Do I need to update or will this run ED okay? The rest of my specs are pretty good Quad core intel at 3.4Ghz, 16 GB system Ram.

The thing I would suggest you do is check the frame rate you get when running the card. I had a AMD HD6670 and had to replace it because I was only getting a paltry 19 frames a second  I got an Nvidia GTX 760 on Thursday and the frame rates are now between 58-60 and that's with everything on high so I am well chuffed with that. Also the game currently has issues with the AMD cards and even though there is a work around for this I decided it was time for a change.

Yeah, I've noticed a few games have issues with AMD. Might just go for the GTX type cards. BTW I can't run the game because I am going to buy standard beta when it comes out. I purchased an x52 pro instead of getting the premium beta. Made more sense to me to do that

If you haven't got it already I would also suggest that you invest in something called voice attack which I think will add to the enjoyment of the game big time. Since it only costs $8 (about £4.77) its definitely well worth it imo.

I love voice attack. Purchased it the other day and I am busy training windows speech recognition all the words I need to use. I'm currently using it well in some of my racing games. Voice attack was made for this game imho. That and buttkicker. There is nothing like feeling your seat rumble as you raise thrusters.

GTX 750ti are pretty cheap. And they run cool and silent. Might just do the trick. I don't need to waste 3-400 dollars just for a new VGA card. The minister of finance would never approve.

Hmm. This is a bit worrying. I'm planning on starting the beta as soon as my HOTAS setup arrives, but I've got a Radeon HD 6900. If this isn't going to cut the mustard it'll be a pain to wait for a new card as well.

it goes much higher if you switch Vsinc off.
but theres no need to do so.

if you consider upgrading , you might want to take in account what the OCR needs.

i'm running a mid range GTX 660 that I have tweaked to a little shy of the melting point.. it crunches out 50+ FPS with shadows turned off.. I only lag a bit in FSD when i'm close to a ring planet. other than that the only problem I have so far is the P2P network lag.

The game seems to me to like a lot of GPU memory. I had a GTX570 with 1280 on it and although FPS wise it held up well even on high settings in more intense gameplay it was prone to crash, too many textures loading up I think. Dropping some settings to med cured it though.

The GTX770 with 4Gb on it sails along full settings regardless so far but it's only the beta and hardware demands are more than likely going to increase as the game fills out

I'm playing ok with a HD5770 1Gb DDR5 and an i5-2500K processor. I will probably upgrade the card when the Maxwell cards come out, but the bets is playable with my current set-up so am in no rush.

The game is currently unoptimized, so the demands are more likely to go down than up.

Yes Frontier had announced this principle. Frontier wants that the largest numbers possible of players, can play ED

Indeed. It seems a bit odd that fewer new home PCs have seperate graphics cards than did back in the day. A lot of modern home desktops seem to rely on Intel integrated graphics to manage everything. I guess to reach the true mass market on PCs nowadays you need to have minimum settings that permit this.

*Edit* I'm talking about the sort of PC that non-gamers buy at PC World, not the pixel-chewing beasts on the desks of most gaming forum members.

Looks like I wont need to upgrade if that's the case. Once everything is optimized, then it should be fine. I might not be able to run all the bells an whistles, but it's not worth it.

I'd respectfully disagree.

When you see everything maxed out on three screens in the dark, with ambient backlighting - people literally go wow!

VGA card lol :)

The 90's called it wants it's vernacular back.

It also wants this whole message board system promptly returned via flux capacitor.

really tho, you did the best thing by getting the HOTAS instead.

Wait till you see if your overclocked PGU will hack it. I have no idea where it falls in the spectrum of cards released in the last decade but if you know what a vga card is you probably know how to squeeze every erg out of it; and who knows till you try!

How are people with multi-GPU set ups finding the game? Is SLI/Crossfire support implemented and working well yet? Must admit, I like turing the pretties up but for me, I'll sacrifice them for the sake of getting a silky-smooth 60fps (or 120 in 3D) as said smoothness enhances gameplay more for me than, say, an extra level of AA.

Scoob.

i have the same CPU, 8gb ram, but a slightly better gpu (HD6950 with 2GB ram) - only playing single player mission 3 at the moment but it runs fine at 2560x1440

cheers
