Do I need to refine these elements I'm mining?

Hi all,

I'm new to mining but I really want to get into the Engineering business. I'm following a tutorial that says to get started mining the following items:

Nickel
Iron
Sulphur
Phosphorus
Carbon

I made the assumption that I would need a refinery, but when I opened it up, none of the items I mined showed up. So I made another assumption, that these things don't need refining.

I just wanted to check and make sure about this. Do I need the refinery or not?

Elemental materials (i.e. not mining fragments) do not need to be refined.

Those elements are soo common on planets, never bothered mining for them - surely a quick SRV trip is a better use of the time?

This. You would be better of shooting rocks with your SRV than mining belts for them.

My Dolphin Explorer carries a pair of mining lasers to harvest these in times of need.
No refining required, just space in your material bin.

The confusion is in the use of the word mining I believe.
Asteroid mining needs a refinery.

In my book searching for materials on planetary surfaces is not really mining. You just find them lying around.
I hope one day we will get actual planetary mining in the game, perhaps with a specialized mining SRV.
