Do I REALLY need to murder innocent traders to get mechanical components?

I get that some of the data types may be unique to certain ships.

I get that certain weapon fragments may be unique to certain fighter ships

but i just am not seeing what a trade ship would have that no other ship would have. I know its a game etc and i also know i can blow up "innocents" risk free legally speaking in an anarchy state but............

Sad as it sounds i do not really want to blow up innocent ships.. also logically i can see no reason that "mechanical components" would only be found on trade ships.........

am i missing something? I have certainly kept an eye out for mission rewards but just not seeing them.

thanks

They do come up as rewards, and in some USS, but seemingly never when you need them... ;)

NO you dont have to murder anyone to get it it may take longer but no need for aggresion

In nav beacons you can find wanted trader ships. You get a bounty voucher in addition to the mech components. Their spawn rate isn't high and not all of them drop mech components but you'll get them eventually.

Seeing these in some Degraded Signal Sources, almost always in Combat Aftermath USS.
Think I've passed by 40+ I could have collected in the last 2 days, didn't need any more though.

For combat-gained Mechanical Components, I'd hug a busy Station looking for a Wanted AspS/AspX/Type-6/Type-7 etc. , otherwise Smuggler-Archetype NPCs in NAV Beacons would do.

In compromised nav beacons I regularly see wanted Hauler/T6/T7/Asp*.

Might help your conscience.

Or how about "Seeking Weapons" in Anarchy. Full of T9s and the odd T6/7, not wanted but weapons dealer so maybe not quite innocent.

I saw a "Seeking Weapons" in LP 790-29 yesterday.

I'm not 100% sure on those materials specifically, but look for combat aftermath signal sources. I believe that the system type and security can have an affect on the types of materials that drop, so if you're not finding what you need try a different system. Also signal sources in shipping lanes are worth paying particular attention to.

Smugglers are traders. You can get mechanical components from them. I think some pirate ships drop them too. Navigation beacons are a good place to get mechanical components. No need to kill innocents and the system security ships will help you getting the mech. components.

I spent 3 nights of 4 hours each searching system USS of all security levels and found precisely zero mechanical components. In the end, I was so macked off that the next trader I saw got the good news and I took a quick trip to Deciat to get rid of the evidence!

The non-combat methods I'm aware of for getting these, as well as Chemical Manipulators and other similar items, are mission rewards and USSs. I have found them in Degraded Emissions, Encoded Emissions, and Combat Aftermath types. If you don't want to blow anything up, your best bet is cruising for these USSs. It's random, of course, so you may get lucky right away or spend a day doing it. But you'll find some eventually.

I agree OP. I RP as a bounty hunter so it felt wrong having to blow up innocent traders. However it felt a little better when I was scooping up mechanical components.

You could always join a powerplay faction, I feel a little dirty saying that, for a legitimate reason to shoot traders. Albeit an absurd one.
