Do mines work as a defensive weapon?

I believe their damage type was changed to the ther mic with 1.3 but then read about bugs associated with teleporting mines etc. To anyone with recent experience with mine launchers: are they now a viable defensive weapon on a big trading ship?

Well, you can chose; throw rocks at the enemy or use mines, they have the same effect.

Might want to rethink this statement considering that asteroids are now the NPC's arch-nemesis.

Supposedly mines are getting a re-balance in 1.5, we'll have to wait and see OP. Til then don't bother. Such a shame, I remember when NPC's used to terrorize me in my Eagle with them, tons of fun.

They should do LOADs of damage, not show on the radar and be invisible to PD's.
Then, they may just have some use if you are trying to high-tail it out to SC.

Or, on impact just give the victim ship a moderate amount of damage (as per a missile) but stick them in a spin, as per failed interdiction.

useless. Sadly - this could be a good pirate defence for traders... but no. worthless totally

Yup, on a defensive Asp you could chuck 6 mines per salvo while running.

Now just imagine if they did enough damage to make people fear them AND being only visible within 500 meters or so on the radar...

Mines used to 2-shot an Eagle or Viper. A few people made some posts on the forum commenting how awesome this was (no sarcasm) Mines got nerfed into uselessness.

Way to read the crowd FD

This is disappointing news. I was stripping down my ASP for long range exploring but did not want to be completely defenseless. Maybe missiles would be a better option unless you have to face your enemy to fire them?
