do not afk

You launched and then went afk and you are surprised you lost your ship?

Can you provide more details?

You would think that they would bust out the space tow ship. Nah we'll just blow you up. I'm not entirely sure if I actually did press launch but at the death screen I was told the station detroyed me.

appreciate your honesty & explaining what happened to you ..
I have often gone AFK leaving my ship on the landing pad .. I will ensure in future I either Move to the Hanger/Garage .. or Log out

fair play, OP was not complaining, and we all (ok most of us) do things which with hindsite are dumb.

take me. Just last night, with probably 500hrs logged.

my shiny new python (I am taking it slow enjoying the journey hence only just getting the python). with almost a 4 million rebuy and with 260 tons of palladium you would think I would know better than to alt tab out to upfate my captains log with some trade route info when approaching an outpost. I got my timings out, next thing i know i hear the proximity warning and alt tabbed back in to see head on collision.

thank the gods for 4 pipps to shields. I lived to tell the tale, but it was a dumb ass thing to do and only luck I got away with it.

after you press the lauch button, otherwise you lose an 80m type 9

I'm not saying I did this, but someone I know *cough* me *cough* was looking for a good imperial RES for the CG, browsing forums and such. I came back when I heard myself being destroyed. Turns out I launched, and opened the galaxy map, and then proceeded to forget that I had launched.

I was in a 300M Python at the time.

OK, if we're playing the "Words of Wisdom" game :

Don't go downstairs to let the dog out when the jump countdown starts, not without double (nay, TRIPLE) checking that you've zeroed the throttle. Otherwise you come back to find that you've been unceremoniously dumped out of frameshift, and can't get away without your heat level going up over 130%.

At that point I was only a couple hundred ly away from civilisation, and went back for repairs, but if I'd been halfway to Sgr A* that would have major.

Yesterday I accidentally boosted my Cobra into an Anaconda I was fighting in a Resource Extraction Site, after my shields went down, because I pressed the boost button i.s.o. the secondary fire button. Instant death was the result and a insurance fee of 175K credits.

That was the third death in the span of two weeks. Number 1 was when I decided to kill one last Viper before turning in my 800K credits worth of bounties whilst at 20% hull strength and he turned out to be slightly tougher than I had anticipated. Poof! Number 2 was when I decided to fly back to an Orbis station after having spent weeks only docking at small platforms and then misjudged my approach angle. Rammed my Cobra straight into the face of the station just below the toaster rack. You'd think I would have learned to be more careful after those two incidents.

The thing to take away from this is that there are many ways to die in Elite Dangerous and most of them are related to overconfidence or errors in judgement. It's when you get complacent that the game will punish you for it.

Lol nice, this is what duel monitors and fullscreen windowned mode is for :p

lol indeed..... I play in the rift however (so kind of 2 screen) but it locks out the main monitor screen when you are in VR mode unless you properly alt tab.
ahh fair enough, wish i could use something like that, but far to many interruptions.... and im addicted to roccat power grid .. added to which, ive had the flu, and the coughing from that has rendered me hardly able to talk atm so VA would be out of the question :p

I like this thread. Reminds me of my stupid station death.. Coming in for landing in my 11m Asp, Entering the port and suddenly alarms and red lights everywhere. I forgot to ask permission. In my panic, Instead of hitting full reverse I pressed the boost button. Less than three seconds later my ship was having a date with the back wall of the station and I was down 1.1 million.

You'd think I'd have learned about the merits of taking care with the boost...

Cut to three nights ago. Fighting in a RES while it's in the shadow of the planet. It's also 2am and I'm very very sleepy. I boosted just to get some distance and find out what the yellow marks on my scanner were. The problem is, in the shadow, the rocks are all black. And, to quote holly, "...and the thing about space, the colour of space, your basic space colour, is black. So how are you supposed to see them?". By the time I saw the black rock, my boost burn was over and my 30+ million clipper turns into space dust. I also lost almost 2.5 million of bounties I had been collecting. I'll never fight in a RES again in the shadow... even if the sunrise is beautiful.
