I'm assuming they do, but I can find no concrete info and it will be a while before I can test this. What can I say, I just don't like the idea of an empty seat on my ship.

No they don't. Its something i've been wanting FD to add since we got NPC crew.

General - Put NPC crew in empty seats in your cockpit/bridge.
I intuitively thought this was the case already, but I asked in the newcomers section since I couldn't find mention of it. There are several aesthetic reasons, but personally I find the idea of exploring the deepest regions of space with an empty seat behind my back pretty bleak and depressing...
I s'spose there must be a number of things CMDR's have put forward that would be great ideas. I would love (very minor wants, mind you):
And, from what I hear, when the FC's are in flight, you don't actully see anything. They simply fold space, travelling without moving.
- A greater control over cockpit colours and lights (as in, turn off those lights and change the UI colours without resorting to editing XML files)
- An in-game music player where you can your own, say, MP3's (without having to use a third party music app outside the game)
- More COVAS voices

I searched for a little while and only found one thread with no replies. If I missed any they can't have been recent.
Maybe a lot of the suggestions were in general discussion.
I know i made a suggestion about this in the suggestion subforum a couple of years ago.
Many threads disappeared when the Forum moved to this new version.
However, in the main the Forum search engine is pants since even a cursory gogglification gives some results:

You do know that in multicrew you can see the crew in the seats of your ship.

Multi-crew with other live players is where you fill up the chairs. Hiring NPCs to fly SLF fighters nope. It also requires making friends in the game with being able to trust them over time as some griefers play the game to fire your turrets making you wanted or worse. It is their gameplay thing.
Check out www.inara.cz with hundred of groups if you want to explore multi-crew with frieds who know what they are doing. Don't worry as they also have real lives and will accommodate you when you play the game when you can.
If you need a friend I am CMDR Hooplah on the PC. But get your voice comms together as texting is too slow. Then maybe I can help as well as many others.

.... of course you can always have multiple accounts, run on secondary computers and multicrew yourself.
