Do people play mouse and keyboard at all ??

I was wondering because its a real nightmare so far the few times ive tried.
Anyone have any advice to share with me ? :)

I play completely mouse and keyboard.
I rebound almost all the keys.

I use up down left right cursor for pitch/roll and , and . for yaw.

I only use the mouse to fire weapons primary and secondary.

What issues are you experiencing ?

Yes, I am running Mouse + Keyboard. Pitch and Roll on mouse + fire on mouse. Yaw on keyboard.

It took me several hours to get a config I am happy with. I would suggest using SP mission 1 and practice, pitch and roll. You need to get the right amount of dead zone to suit your style. Then add yaw. Once happy move to mission 2.

Then move to multiplayer and practice docking. There are some thrusters which I have bound to keys - with landing gear down you have to keep the button pressed to sustain power which is great for fine tuning your position over the docking bays.

Well, let me take the other side of the spectrum on that. I highly recommend picking up a joystick, and possibly a throttle as well. I think you will find the interface more intuitive and precise.

More importantly, the feeling of immersion is greater as well.

You can pick up a simple stick pretty cheap from amazon, between 15 and 30 dollars: HERE

Seriously, take your first step to the dark side... you might end up like me: with a forcefeed back joystick, throttle, and rudder combo, TrackIR, and a Volair flight chair. I certainly have never looked back.

hehe thanks guys, yer I am not sure wife will let me buy more PC gear at moment :D....

My biggest problem is the accuracy in sp mission 1 I find I cant hit things without stopping lol an the boxes dont seem to move so that tells you something :).

I will sit down an spend some time to try an work out the correct layout I need.. cheers guys.

Accuracy should be ok, like I said I use the up down left right cursor keys and with , and . with yaw which is right next to the cursor keys they are all within reach. I have been using keyboard for everything though for over 15 years though.

I did as I mentioned have to rebind almost every key to suit though. I would recommend keyboard for pitch, roll and yaw without hesitation.

If you have a console controller, some work with E: D. I tried KBM, didn't like it - didn't really give it a chance, though -, and DS4 works very well.

Roll on A&D, throttle on W&S, pitch on mouse forward/back, yaw on mouse side to side. Directional thrusters on keypad. FA on. Works a treat for me. Docking/landing/combat all fine.

I can control it so well I have time and opportunity to minimise to desktop and whinge about something on these very forums.

Usually it's about Supercruise or space station design. It's not about controlling my ship with keyboard & mouse though, well not anymore... :D

Yep i'm on keyboard and mouse and i'm doing ok though I need to learn to coordinate the yawing and thrusters while using the mouse a bit...I'm a bit slow but i'm getting there.

I find it more accurate and responsive than the xbox360 pad

I only play MS\KB and it's really good. Of course at some point I will setup my HOTAS but as I'm between locations I use the MS\KB.

i didn't try myself as i can afford proper setup and playing THE ED game with the mouse is plain unacceptable for me, but i have been talking to others and they say there is NO difference, just practice, you can get as good with mouse as good with stick.

i never play any driving and flying games with the mouse, but that's just me.

edit: and mouse input will get huge overhaul soon. read this post

Roll on A&D, throttle on W&S, pitch on mouse forward/back, yaw on mouse side to side.

I use this setup as well, don't have any issue with control, and having yaw on mouse makes it easier for me to line the sights up when a little off. I have sensitivity set at about 50% and deadzone just above zero.
Played around in the first single player mission until felt comfortable with the settings.

Not had a joystick for years and always have used mouse/keyboard without any issues.

Oh I can afford it, but when your married, self preservation = cash flow... trust me, you CANT sneak a thrust-master past your wife when she plays on her PC 3 feet away lol,

Am slowly comign to terms with it, Damn space station keeps attacking me though, everytime I try to dock, it up an MOVES!!'s the entrance on me hehe:eek:

Mouse vs joystick

Hi,

I used to use mouse and keyboard exclusively, having been somewhat in awe of those who could skilfully use a joystick in dogfights. Then my right (mouse) hand got some sort of RSI after years of abuse as a programmer.

So I glumly got myself a Saitek X52 joystick from Ebay, and although I felt very uncomfortable with it at first, after a day's practice I felt more at home with it than with the mouse. I was very surprised at the degree of fine analogue control I have, and at the sense of immersion it gives you when docking in particular.

I hate the thrust control still, though, and use my left hand on the keyboard for all that.

Good luck to anyone else trying out a joystick.

John

If the wife is a gamer...you dog, if she uses it purely as a tool...you poor guy :(

Hello guys, mb somebody can help me..
I think i've setted my controls in the good way, but im facing a serious problem since i got into 2nd mission.
Ofc, its rather fly-sim problem than E: D one.
So, i can easily get the stern of npc and be there for while, but only untill he turns to me with face and then gets behind my back.
So i tried to turn (in the many ways) and at least see him, but couldnt do that for like 10-12 trials.
Once NPS gets behind my back, its like 100% death for me.
So is there any tips, how to turn and face him again? Say, i got 50% of speed. What i have to do?
Ofc you might say "dont let him to get behind your back", but still...

same set up, works brilliantly if you ask me :)

One trick is to turn flight assist off and zero your throttle. Then just keep pitching the nose up. You are no longer circling, and should get the enemy in your sights soon. Once you do, turn FA back on.

Yeah, good idea, but the problem is- i cant figure out where to turn. I mean, im trying with my nose, but while that, he kills me in 5-6 secs..
Or it is supposed to be like this? I mean, once he gets behind you, you suppose to lose?

I use mouse and keyboard - it's just like ArcElite with yaw boosters fitted.

I may buy a gaming mouse with extra buttons and maybe one of those lighty-up keyboards. I love the DeLacey BBC Micro style keyboard that's in the ship cockpits. :)
