Do story events have a physical presence in-game?

I'm tempted to do the very long jump to one of the story events that's unfolding. But need to ask, do these story events actually have a physical presence in the game? I have searched but haven't found an answer.

By that I mean if, for example, GalNet announces that ships have been deployed to a certain system should I be able to fly to that system and actually see those ships and any potential later conflict? Or do these events only generate more of the same kill/trade/loot bulletin missions in that system.

Not looking for spoilers, I just don't want to spent the time and credits if it's the same stuff I could do at Barnard's Star (my adopted home). But if we're talking Battlestar Galactica I'll be there in a shot. I just don't want to have false expectations.

Cap Ship war zones are pretty awesome. It is pretty intense and you don't make as much per kill but the targets are so numerous it doesn't really matter. Choose your side wisely.
