Do we know anything about "looting", yet?

Apart from materials sometimes being needed by engineers to create experimental modules?

We are one week away from the 2.1 beta, but still haven't heard much (anything?) about one of the main features of that release - or have I just missed it?

I think that is it. "Looting" = getting materials (and i think commodities like metals etc) and "crafting" = using these materials and other components to make engineering upgrades.

We already know that we can get materials from planetary rings (and i think asteroid belts). I'm sure there will be added materials to planetary surface (in addition to current materials we can find with SRV). Also missions now can reward materials (and other commodities). Maybe some (rare) materials require to literally loot other ships? Hopefully after tomorrows newsletter we are smarter.

Man, I was afraid that would be it, just a new term for gathering materials, no actual looting of ship wrecks (in space or on surfaces).

Don't get me wrong, but I really hope you are wrong. ;)

Loot and Crafting is what tomorrows newsletter will be about.

They did show this image back in Newsletter 115:

The concept image below shows a Commander approaching a wrecked ship on a planet surface, getting ready to scan a Data Recorder for the valuable information it holds.

Maybe "data" will play a bigger role in regards to Loot/Crafting? Think "blueprints".

Yes, I remember the "Data Recorder" (community enthusiasm about newsletters was at an all-time low after #115 was released ;)), but I don't think a blueprint alone warrants the term "looting". I hope the newsletter tomorrow really brings some big previously unannounced information about looting.

It just seems strange that they would go into so much detail multiple times about other headline features like Engineers, revamped mission system and experimental modules over the course of the last few weeks, without spending a word on the other big thing of 2.1, "looting", until one week before beta release...:S

So that means "looting" comes down to just:
- finding a blueprint (possibly by "looting" a random data cache on a planet POI)
- materials that we get from shooting rocks and use for synthesis atm.
- commodities that we can buy from markets

Nothing about destroying ships and searching their wrecks for usable parts.
The whole "looting" part wasn't what I was looking forward to most in 2.1, so while it's disappointing that looting doesn't amount to more, I guess I can live with gathering the needed ingredients for the engineer "recipes" in such a simple way.

I just think it's a little exaggerated to call such a simple process of collecting stuff in a way that is in the game for a long time already "looting" and make it a headline feature of 2.1, implying that we get a whole new mechanic in game to gather stuff.

I am still very, very much looking forward to 2.1, and with persistent NPCs with faces and awesome looking engineer bases expect it to become my favourite ED release, yet.

It's possible the blueprints come from the treasure maps mentioned. Makes sense when ya think about it. As for the other stuff, it seems to be awarded by missions, and possibly as you gain more influence. We'll see in a few days I 'spose.

The real question is how difficult this will be. With NPCs now scaling to your combat rank, that means no harmless eagles when you're Elite. I'm really curious to see how that plays out (would be funny for Robigo lol) in the long run. Not only are they "shaking things up" (to quote Sandy) with the modifications, they're doing it with gameplay as well. A lot of people are going to really be upset I think since Elite's about to get a LOT more Dangerous. [alien]

Edit - Additionally, USS info can be gathered from scanning the system Nav Beacon now. Presumably you can hunt down new crafting materials that way as well, in addition to planetary POIs.

Only thing I know about looting is I always end up with the useless stuff:

"The cape of good Humour" gold item
"The sword of Self-destruction" platinum item
" The Ticklish Armour of Fun" gold item
and so forth, I dont think I will loot :(

Cheers Cmdr's
