Do we really want Thargoids?

I just played some Dead Space as it was free on the 360 and is backwards compatible.. and I really quickly realized that maybe we shouldn't be so hyped for an alien insectoid race that will probably feast on our flesh.

You could go watch some of the clips I've made in the first 30 minutes of gameplay. Can't say it doesn't feel satisfying as all hell to beat the crap out of those.. things.

Dead Space is a pretty terrifying game. I never got very far in it though so I've probably seen nothing like the worst in it.

But the tears of players is far more satisfying?

There are worse alien threats. The "wolves" (aka inhibitors) in Alastair Reynolds "Revelation Space" are something you really wouldn't want to meet. Similar to the Stargate "Replicators" or The Flood in Halo

I think the general term is "hegemonising swarm".......

The replicators aren't that bad neither is the flood, especialy when you are a badass super marine.

...nope, at least for me. One of ED's distinguishing features is its [relatively!] more ground aesthetic and tone; as Douglas Adams wrote - space is big, really big... but it's also, thus far, empty and devoid of life.

As a space sim with a few decent nods to astronomy, ED represents the vastness of the galaxy relative to the fact fact that we are alone. That resonates, from reality to ED's galaxy simulation. A few unknown objects here and there are fine, I suppose, but other advanced lifeforms turning up will be a fairly major turn off for me.

We don't really know if there ain't other inteligent life out there in our galaxy. There definetly could be so not sure why if Thargoids were introduced to ED it would be such a turn off. They're already there somewhere we know that, the devs themselfs have said the galaxy is populated by a couple of alien races.

Because at the moment - and throughout the duration of our species' stay on this planet - there isn't anything else. Microbial organisms and the very basics of 'life' could be within our own solar system, sure, but that's a very different thing to a more typical, conventional/conservative sci-fi setting.

Yeah, and I know I'd be in the minority on this, but so it goes. I'm not interested in aliens and pew-pew fights with them - I've done that in countless other less serious and less interesting/engaging/compelling games. The day I have to worry about being ambushed a few thousand light years from the bubble is probably the day I'd just stop playing ED.

I won't be starting a petition about this, btw. I'm sure there are far more people who'd want pew-pew fights with aliens in it than not, so I can't really have any complaints, and it is part of Elite/Frontier history.

I hope FD will give the Thargoids some depth.
I would deplore it if they were just mindless killers.
It would be great if they would show some unexpected behaviour.

We only will get Thargoids after Enginers, ship launch bay, multicrew updates. Why? We better to have a very big firepower agains them. Which is still would not be enouth.. You don't realise yet how actualy are they terrifying in fact. You can't hide from them even in Whitchspace (Hyperspace)

If you are not yet realise.. All of these updates is for prepairing us for.. THEM.

Thargoids.. it will become your worst
nightmare when they come back.

This whole post got me excited for their return. Thank you.

But what of the possibilty of them or us not being hostile with that pew pew so to speak. Would you be more inclined to accept an "alien" intelligence in ED if it were maybe not so hostile an contributed to the atmosphere, culture and systems of the game...

It is also possible of having a ultra advanced and/or elusive alien life which may or may not be hostile or friendly and purely interactive with our galaxy, other AI and players... Somewhat like the UAs but probably in a more complex way.

Fair enough I guess.

I don't see any way around it. The Aliens are coming. Too many customes expect it. I think most of the galaxy will remain relatively peaceful and safe for quiet exploration ... but there will definitely be 'bubbles' of alien space out there too. The Thargoids are a big part of Elite and not having them make an appearance would make the game a lot less Elite-like.

Personally I don't want to meet the Thargoids in battle. I've never survived against that octagonal menace. Thargoids = an aweful lot of Brave Sir Robin'ing.
