Do we want fluff or content?

Here I am, opening up another proverbial can of worms, I can't help it, I think too much :D

So here is the question: What direction would you like FD to concentrate on:

(1) More ascetically pleasing things like ship paint jobs, ability to change your hud and weapon colours, space legs and atmospheric landings (more on those two in a sec), more ships, new outfits and accessories for holo-me
or
(2) Fix the known problems, have a 'tiger team' that looks at this forum (and others) to help identify any new problems and work quickly to remediate those problems, create a better system to generate missions, heck - give us more interesting and a better variety of missions, have the ability to quickly shut down a known exploit, give us CG's that aren't tied into a specific role (they all seem to be either hauling something, or shooting something, it is either one or the other).

The reason I mentioned space legs and atmospheric landings is unless they are done right the first time, they won't add anything to the game we don't already have. Lets say they give us the ability to wander around our ship, honestly how often will the majority of players do that after the initial 'Gee Wiz so this is what the cargo hold looks like' phase? Want to wander around the station, every station will have to be recoded to make it interesting. Want to wander around a planet, we can do that now in the SRV. Want to interact with other Commanders, unless they fix the matchmaking system you will probably end up only chatting to NPCs and we all know how mundane their conversational skills are. If they want the full FPS experience, they are talking about a complete new game tacked onto the existing one and I think we can all imagine how that would work out lol

Now onto atmospheric landings. This is a fairly intelligent community be told, we will know a T-9 should handle like a dropped brick in atmosphere, that there should be a friction induced event when entering the atmospheric envelope. We will expect to see some form of life on some of the planets, whether it be animal or vegetation. How will FD handle populating all these planets with vegetation, buildings, NPCs and not make everything looks the same? We know that the weather will effect flying conditions. People here have already stated they will be satisfied if FD release atmospheric landings just for barren worlds (no life, no vegetation and probably no weather) - but to me that is exactly what we have now just with a different coloured 'sky' - no gain, only ascetic fluff.

We know FD only have a finite amount of resources so everything everybody wants can't be done. Personally, I was pleased when I read the proposed improvements stated for 'Beyond', trying to fix the base things first. Adding 'pretty things' only benefits a game when it adds to it, not when is overlays it. Now I'm not saying we can't have it all, just which do you think should be a priority and which in your opinion could be put on the back burner until the game becomes more playable and enjoyable?

The OP is filled with fallacies. The tl;dr is basically:

"Imagine if space legs and atmospheric planets are done in a way that does not offer fun gameplay. Would you rather have that or fun gameplay?"

Most people would argue that we want atmospheric planets (and/or space legs) with fun gameplay. The rest also makes no sense. Ship artists dont code atmo flight models. Mission designers dont create accessories for holo-me. All these people are already hired by FD, I suggest we just let them do their job. :)

Most of the quick and dirty ways to put space legs and atmo landings out the door ASAP would be the kinds of results the OP is talking about.

So his question is cogent -- do you want it done right now? Or do you want it done right?

Its getting close to 2018, evidently they didnt do it quick and dirty or we had been playing it for years by now.

The thing is that sentence can be said today, tomorrow, 10 years from now or 5 years ago. You can still say in 2025 "you want it done now or want it done right" and it will still mean exactly the same as today: nothing, because nobody knows when is the "done right" time.

There are a few things currently in the game like player wings, matchmaking so you can play with your friends, PowerPlay, that still have players complaining about today that give the impression that they were done 'quick and dirty'. Would you like to see those fixed or new things added?

Do you really think whomever does the netcode is the same guy who designs powerplay and is also the guy who designs atmospheric flight models?

Stop with the false options please, its pointless. They will focus on the Beyond content and whatever the secret Premium Content is for the coming year. This topic is just silly.

I want missions that pay me for the time I put in them.
Spending 40 minutes ferrying some "adventurer" around to 5 different systems 400LY away for 4 million credits is insulting.
Carrying 20 economy passengers to a drop off point 10,000 LS away for 40,000 credits is equally insulting.

I want to land on a moon and not see the same random pattern of rocks, boulders, and pebbles that I see on every single moon.

I want to land on our Moon.

I want engineering without RNG, or having to build up favor after every single "special" modification I make. Favor is favor....stop treating it like a currency.

I want a better wanted system that doesn't punish me for returning fire on some NPC that interdicts me in a system where I'm not even wanted....which of course makes me wanted once I shoot him for defending myself.

I want a better HUD coloring system that doesn't force me to choose between having a psychedelic portrait or being able to tell friend from foe on the radar.

I want better CGs that don't suck the fun out of monotonous, endless, repetitive actions.

I want a BGS where FDev doesn't artificially move the boundaries to cater to their own CG needs whenever it suits them.

I want a more robust and fully fleshed out smuggling system.

I want to be rewarded for attacking a moon base that's heavily defended and stealing all their data from the core computer. Risk vs reward is awful.

I want scavenging to actually be profitable. Being forced to load only 2 items into my SCV cargo at a time is ridiculous. Selling occupied capsules for about 20k a pop is also ridiculous. Why even bother?

.....could care less about atmospheric planets.

I gave up on ED having any fun gameplay long ago. ED does only one thing good in my eyes, and that's fly in space and make it look good. I can't count on Fdev to make good gameplay, but they sure as hell can make space look good.

i'm not going into details of your dichotomy (which has a lot of issues), but what on the milky way makes you think your or our opinion would have the slightest influence on the development plan or the design? are you new or haven't you been paying attention for the last 2 years?

ahh, youth ... my envy!

I want fluffy content. :D

Specifically, I want better exploration tools and more interesting objects and phenomena to discover, preferably in some other color than beige. Luckily, FD has indicated that this is coming in "Beyond".

Don't forget, the time of a graphic artist can't be spent on development and bugfixing, and vice-versa. These two options:

(1) More ascetically pleasing things like ship paint jobs, ability to change your hud and weapon colours, space legs and atmospheric landings (more on those two in a sec), more ships, new outfits and accessories for holo-me
or
(2) Fix the known problems, have a 'tiger team' that looks at this forum (and others) to help identify any new problems and work quickly to remediate those problems, create a better system to generate missions, heck - give us more interesting and a better variety of missions, have the ability to quickly shut down a known exploit, give us CG's that aren't tied into a specific role (they all seem to be either hauling something, or shooting something, it is either one or the other).

... are comparing apples and oranges... the two skillsets to address the two problem sets are (mostly) wildly different.

If the art team are "Done" before the dev team on a new piece of content, you can't just, say, sack the art team and hire more devs, because then you're stuffed for artists down the track. You also don't want them idling, so you give them tasks like the "fluff" you mention.

Personally, while I've verbalised plenty of times what I want from core gameplay enhancements, I also want my Thargoid Sensor bobblehead :D

I'd buy fuzzy dice, but only if there's a rearview display "mirror" to hang them from. They should move when your ship changes course, similar to the bobble heads. And of course, they would need to come in various garish shades to choose from.
