Do you even dogfight bro???

For starters let me say that before Elite I was a complete stranger to any flying game (with reql mechanics, GOF doesnt really count), not that I'm a pro now, but for someone not used at all to any flying game I find Elite quite "friendly" (I'll explain the " in a bit).
Im no hardcore gamer and I like variety from FPS to RPG but never played anything that involved flight mechanics. i picked up elite and it was freaking hard. I can't remmember how many sidewinders I crashed before properly learned how to dock.
After a couple of weeks of flying and trading I got to the point were I could get a type 9 without worrying about getting blown up or the insurance bug so I decided to do some crazy and went with my lakon to Eranin federal distress signal (of course all my hardpoints with top tier guns).
I must say I was really impress of how easy dogfighting turned out to be once you start using flight assist off. I killed about 15 federals on my slow type 9 without a single mark on my hull, just by doing the old 180 flip while being chased and bang enemy doesn't last a second. I don't know how I would do against human players (probably some old timer would kick my butt) but against npcs is pretty easy just by using FA off. I imagine for smaller ships like a sidewinder or an eagle will be much much easier to use FA off.

So newbies having a hard time try FA off it will really improve your combat skills (no I don't use a joystick, just a xbox 360 controller mapped to my liking).
Anyone else has tried this with a lakon? Care to share other tactics for spcombat on such heavy ship?:D

Good work.

I have only flown a Lakon once and that was at the end of the Alpha when we all got a bunch of free credit. I have not been inclined to spend the time to grind for one since as the game lacks a lot to do.

Glad to see other players figuring things out. I think many of us who have been playing since the Alpha find it hard to understand what it is like for a new player coming to the game as we all were slowly introduced to each feature, thus I am glad to read of someone who is figuring things out nicely.

Glad you are enjoying FA Off. I enjoy it to but am not very good at it. I do like the challenge of it though and appreciate that it takes time and practice to master.

I do tend to think that things are a bit too easy right now. With that being said the final game will definitely need some kind of basic tutorial, in my opinion, to avoid frustrating new players who are dropped in the deep end.

Here is my only Lakon experience ever...

I agree a tutorial would've been nice but I guess they are saving that for last. I find when you are comfortable with the controller you have FA off is the best, I even use it when trying to aling the beasty lakon to the station entrance much easier with FA off

you should try fighting some PC's and then you see that this tactic doesn't work at all, but NPC's are very easy kill now, unless they attack in big numbers ;)

anyway Flight Assist is interesting beast and in right moments is a saviour, but when i asked one really good combat pilot when does he turn it off the answer was - "never", and when i asked why - "with it on i can do all the same just little better" and he only uses fixed weapons, so probably FA off can be used better with gimballed weapons/missiles but what you gain to your speed you lose with weapon damage, also top guns have no G or T versions at all so you will using mediocre guns, good enough for NPC's who are using same weapon category as well ;)
