Do you get a second try at Salvage Missions?

Hi all,

I just took a couple of salvage missions. One of them went all right, but on the second one I dropped on the target and started scooping, and suddenly like half a dozen ships appeared "drop your cargo and we will let you go". I tried to quickly scoop what I needed, but within a couple of seconds my shields went down and it was all railgun here, beam laser there, kaboom kabam. So I run away. Does anybody the mission target USS going to appear again?

PLOT TWIST: as I was writing this post the mission USS reappeared, so yes, you do get a second chance. Also, you don't need to scoop all the materials on the same go (I could scoop one container the first time and two on the second try).

I will leave the post in the forum anyway as I think it may be useful to others.

Fly safe!

As you discovered, yes, the mission USS will re-spawn.

However, if you are destroyed with any of the mission specific salvage already scooped, then I believe you will not get additional chances, as the cargo is meant to be unique and you lost it...

I like the questions that answer themselves. :)

I think the higher-rank salvage missions can actually only be done like this - bit by bit. No matter what ship you fly, if you're jumped by a wing of five pirates, you leave or die, no way around it.

When I got into that situation the first time, with at least two FdL and several Vultures and others coming at me, I thought "Damn it! If I had some collector limpets I could have taken the three containers!". Perhaps this would work? Although they did get me reeeally quickly.

Yea, I don't think limpets would do any better. When they come in force, the life or death is a matter of seconds.

I usually take limpets with me, assuming I remember to load up on them, in my Python.

When I drop in to the USS, I immediately deploy all limpets, and intentionally ram debris out of the way, and lower the cargo scoop. (Debris kills limpets)
Put 4 pips to shields and wait, when the last container is loaded, close the hatch, boost out and low wake.
If anything shows up, I just prepare to chaff/SCB. You usually have a few seconds before they open fire.

It can also help to target a system for a high wake, if you are likely to be inhibited by a larger ship.

Which is bizarre, since if you collide with the "unique" salvage and destroy it, it will respawn. Pity it's not more consistent.

Yes, yes and yes.

I ran in to unique cargo's blew 2 of them up. Collected the other 2, jumped to SC and waited for the USS to reappear which it did.
Grabbed another 1 before fleeing, and repeated.

So its a Yes Yes Yes.

Hmm... Well, I'm pretty sure that getting destroyed with some or all of the cargo ends the mission, but I could be wrong. It was discussed in another thread.

I generally use limpets for salvage missions these days, so that eliminates accidentally destroying stuff. :)

In my experience the signal source will keep spawning for as many goes as it takes for you to collect the required number of canisters, even if you destroy canisters while attempting to scoop them. BUT if you die with any of the canisters in your hold, the signal sources will stop spawning and you'll never be able to complete the mission. Obnoxiously, it won't *fail* the mission; you just won't ever be able to find the signal source again. You'll have to manually abandon the mission or wait for the time to run out.

Ok. That fits with what I thought happened. I guess it implies that if you are destroyed while attempting a mission with unique cargo, you will not be able to complete it.

Or you put 4 pips to shields, fire chaff and send 1 limpet per can. Using limpets to grab 4 cans in a stationary Python (or larger) while under fire from a wing of smaller ships is no problem, just be ready to jump out as soon as the last can is in.
