Do you keep the free sidewinder after you buy your first ship? I'm thinking it would be nice to have a "trash" ship that I can jump into for experimentation, so will I be able to respawn free sidewinders after I buy my first ship or will I need to get all my trashing out of my system before I buy?

You can part exchange it or keep it. It's up to you!

I still have mine but it's hundreds of lightyears away from where I am now...

You can have a unlimited amount of ships so.
As long as you don't sell the sidewinder you can keep it.

Also if you destroy your ship you can use the option to get a free sidewinder at cost of your current ship.

Mine's still sitting somewhere... not sure where. If they ever introduce the ability to have ships transported I might have it moved simply so I can sell it... tho I'd prefer to just sell it where it is. :)
