Powerplay Do you maintain rating 5?

I pledged my allegeance to Aisling for the prismatics and basically ignored power play for 3 weeks. I'll be 4 weeks this thursday, so I started started earning merits so that I could get my sweet new shields. Then I realized this is kinda fun, and several hours later I'm at 8,000 merits. I thought I would hit 10,000 and then have all the benifits of a 5 rating and continue supporting the cause. Then I heard about merit decay. Apparently half of your merits are lost at every cycle...? So I basically have to get 5,000 merits a week to maintain a rating of 5? I just don't know if it's worth it. 5,000 merits is a substantial investment (of either time or credits) and I'm just not sure the benifits really carry enough weight.

If you maintain a rating of 5, then you will receive 50M credits each week, which covers the cost. The real cost is in time spent accumulating merits when the time could be spent earning money with other activities.

Before I got heavily involved in power play used to only maintain rating 4. However, currently rating 5 is worth worth it to me because I regularly do BGS work in Aisling's territory. It also makes loading up cargo quicker. I don't often undermine or oppose other powers; my efforts are mainly spent on our hauling objectives. I pick up as free power play cargo when I can, but I often fast track. I suppose a mix of part hauling and part combat to rating 5 would make it to where you're netting a profit when you get your 50 mil power play salary, and that's less time spent shooting at things. I'm not in it for the perks, though. I'm in it for the cause. Some cycles I'll far exceed the rank 5 requirements.

If you fly a Cutter or a Type 9 it is not that big of a time requirement. 5k merits is about 3.5 hours worth of fortification, less if you are running preps (only prep what your power says, please). Undermining is free and 5k in UM is quite fast if you have a decent wing.
