Do you need a scanner to scan objects?

Nope
All ships come with a basic scanner. It's not listed under modules for whatever reason.

It is listed under your fire groups in your right UI. The reason is because is is a hardpoint item like a weapon not an internal module. Make sure you equip it to a fire group.

If you jump into a system and see a message that you have discovered something lock onto the star and then fire the scanner. This will discover everything else in the system so fly to then, lock on and watch the scan results to the left of your radar until it resolves.

You have to take exploration data at least 20ly away to sell it at the cartographers entry in station services.

Thanks, I sold the basic discover scanner. Am I no longer able to scan planets even if I am looking at them?

Question, if you have the scanner out and somebody comes across you and scans you, they'll know your hardpoints are deployed. Are you in fact then inviting them to attack you? Because to them, you're in attack mode, no?

I sold my scanner and I can no longer scan planets, they remain unexplored and un-targetable.

I'm able to scan without deploying the hardpoints, so it shouldn't be a threat. Also as long as you're not wanted with a bounty, nobody will attack you unless they were going to attack you anyways Deploying weapons will just make the cautious.

yep, you do. I may remove mine to free up the slot.
