Do you only play solo?

I've not played multi-player yet, and likely won't, because I'm a bit slow on the reflexes front and imaging (correctly or otherwise) that multi-player is just going to be full of trigger-happy idiots killing indiscriminately.

Does anybody else just play solo? Also it would be interesting to hear if anybody thinks my perceptions of multi-player are completely wrong too :)

Sometimes I play solo, sometimes I play online. The first one I usually do when I just want to fly around a little and continue exploring the available systems. The last one I do whenever friends of mine are online. Then we like to explore/trade/fight etc. together.

I don't. I've only played in open online mode since the start of Premium Beta and I haven't been killed by any players (except during the pre-planned skirmishes we've had). Not all of us are idiots, also I imagine a fair percentage of the ones doing it at the moment are only doing it because they know it won't affect their standings/reputation as it's only Beta.

I've never played solo so far, always multiplayer.

I'm sure my reflexes are slower than when I played Elite on the speccy but haven't had any problems, mind you only think I've had a couple of PvP battles (lost one, the other was a no score draw).

Go online and have fun, if you avoid the centre systems it's pretty quiet.

Cmndr Travers if you don't mind I'm going to add you as a friend. online is fun (my reflexes are also bad lol) I just keep my viper ready to boost away if people start shooting but I've found that most people are fine in online and just want fun like we do.

Please accept my friend invite and jump in a smallish group with us, we can go pop some federation fighters together for easy money :)

Feel free, though I'm type-9ing at the mo to buy an Anaconda :) Will be fun to join in sometimes though

So far i only played solo. I may go online once i stop ramming into stations and other assorted nonsense. I'm not too afraid of PvP, although it's not really my thing.

From my experience in other games, (space mmo's) people eventually settle on a balance. There will always be a population of hardcore PvPers, and some of those wont really care about your feelings. They will play as "bad" as the game allows them. Its up to the community and the developers to guide the experience to where the most people have the most fun.

To my view, a multiplayer environment is a lot more lively and interesting, if the game gives you the tools to make it so. I believe Elite will evolve a lot in that department once factions and reputations and expansion of colonized space are in place, as i think they will be.

When i trade or NPC hunt to make credits. I solo. Don't see any point playing on a slow system, with all the waiting and waiting. With the 0.0001 risk of getting ganked in a hauler. So I solo. When i fit for combat and PVP I play multi.

A play style I hate as I think your solo game should not be possible to mix with multi game. But there you have it, It's possible so I do it.

So far I've only been playing solo myself and no real expectation of changing that really. Being in solo allows me to really set the pace for what is going on around me and to me whereas anything else involves allowing someone else to have the ability to affect me in those regards. That'd be inconvenient for me right now.

You're wrong friend. I haven't been attacked by any pc's in online mode yet. Only npc's.

Give it a try. It's nowhere as bad as some would make it.

I played solo exclusively at first cos my broadband was not great - having upgraded to fibre I am now trying out online, although that is showing me some of the bugs that don't affect solo so much.

At the moment I'm just hauling away in my hauler to get my Viper or Cobra, so I play Solo.
When I started to play in the premium Beta I only played online though. Then I ordered the oculus and decided to wait until I had it to continue to play. Now I have it, and are just scraping together some creds for better ships, then I'm going multi as well.

In the month and a half that I did play multi I was killed twice by players, and both times in conflict zones. Only once taken by surprise. The other one joined the "wrong" side of the federal distress signal, so I showed him the error of his ways, but he task managed his way back and got me while I was fighting of 2 of the feds.

Basically, no. There's no trigger happy, gun toting crazy in the multi, unless you go looking for them, or ask for them.
You'll be fairly safe anyway.

I only tried online when I tried to meet up with a friend, otherwise, solo.
Once the lag, connectivity issues, rubberbanding etc are fixed to more playable levels, I might go online more often. Right now it causes frustration and its not like the devs dont already know it, right?

Play online. The potential for social interaction and immersion is why I do it. Ive only been ganked once by another cmdr at freeport which is to be expected.

Not really a reflexes game as far as I can tell. Its more of a circle strafing dps master race. More like MWO than a twitch type shooter. More about strategy and how well you control all your independent systems. Give it a shot.

My only gripes with pvp:
-The sidewinder is just about worthless for everything in ED
Missles are complete . Apparently your only challenge with these suckers is hitting a viper....bc viper. I haven't seen any threads about but I think they do too much damage for their ease of use.
Projectile weapons have this target leading indicator which completely negates the difficulty of having a high damage projectile weapon equipped. You just aim for the lead rather than the ship. I think this should be removed.

Are solo and online interchangeable, or having built up lots of money and a great ship solo, do I have to start again with a Sidewinder when I go multiplayer?

I can definitely see the multiplayer experience being better when I go exploring in the final game :)

All of the modes available to us in Beta are online and interchangeable.

Solo-online is a group of one; private groups are controlled access groups; the All Group is the uncontrolled access group.

Players can take the same commander into any of the three groups by selecting the correct option in the game launcher.

Not as bad as reported.

I was solo at first cos of many stories on the forum, but now am nearly always in open. Much more exciting. Honestly you forget your in open after a while till you see a hollow ship to remind you.

It is not as dangerous as some make out. It is a scare tactic to try to introduce extra security measures under the guise of "it's for your protection". It's a very old ploy. If you go way back to the 21st century the world governments of the time on old Earth tried this very same tactic. Be assured commander, you can fly safe in your ship in open.

on and off in my case. i prefer open play but that seems much more buggy than the solo game which seems to work really well. so more solo than open for now but that will turn around as open gets more stable. once it gets stable enough, then it will be all open play for me :)

I've only played solo ever since there was the option to, just like I did with the original Elite. I'll probably stay that way in future, BUT when there is the next wipe and we're all forced to re-start I just might try PvP.

I can't really see the attraction of multiplayer though from my point of view. Not knocking it at all, but it's probably not necessary for me to enjoy the game. :)
