Do you only play solo?

I've only played solo ever since there was the option to, just like I did with the original Elite. I'll probably stay that way in future, BUT when there is the next wipe and we're all forced to re-start I just might try PvP.

I can't really see the attraction of multiplayer though from my point of view. Not knocking it at all, but it's probably not necessary for me to enjoy the game. :)

Ditto spookytooth - almost word-for-word my own situation/view (except I never played the original Elite).

So far I've only played in solo, except to try out open play a few times. From the little online I've played, I've had no problem whatsoever with griefers, but I had a lot of network issues. These are the reasons why I don't play open play :

- At times the initial loading takes like 5-10 minutes (!), against about 30 seconds in solo.

- I got problems at the stations. I asked to return to surface and nothing happened. When I insisted, the ship eventually got brought to the surface after like 3 minutes (while I was browsing the station's menus). Sames goes the other way, when I landed on the station I had a lot of difficulties getting the menus to appear, and entering hangar.

- Loading each area takes a lot longer, especially stations, so every time I exit supercruise I have to wait a long time.

- I went to the Federation Distress Signal in Eranin where I usually like to fight. I was close to an enemy player in a Viper and engaged him. After I landed just a few hits he just FAOff boosted away. I was forced to let go as I couldn't hope to catch him with my Cobra. While this behaviour is fair enough against AI, it just makes confrontations useless against another player. Unless you have the fastest ship yourself, you have no hope of beating another player in a fair fight if he runs at the first sign of trouble. I understand why people do this, hell I probably would myself, but it's just no fun for the attacker.

- Following this, I took on an NPC fed ship. During the entire combat, it kept teleporting due to lag, making it almost impossible to hit even with gimbals. Eventually, it suddenly teleported right in front of me, causing an unavoidable collision which instantly destroyed my Cobra.

Tl;dr : Travel takes ages due to loadings, battles are unplayable due to lag, to the point of destroying my ship caused by unavoidable lag-induced collisions, and when I eventually reach a station I get stuck because I can't enter the hangar, or leave it when I'm finally in it. That's my experience anyway.

I don't know about other people's experiences, but as things are now, online is just unplayable for me. I hope things get better in final release so I can play online, but if they don't I won't cry over it, solo is good enough for me.

EDIT : I have to admit I kind of feel bad about playing solo, because of the massive amount of work the devs put into this aspect of the game...

Only Solo. I'm not too fond of multiplayer in general. In most games the so called "emergent gameplay" usually ends up breaking the illusion instead of supporting it.

I tried Multiplayer in ED for a couple of hours or so, but I didn't see the point. It was the same as Solo play, just with a few blue dots flying around during supercruise and a ton of lag and crashes. Solo works flawlessly, though.

I've not played multi-player yet, and likely won't, because I'm a bit slow on the reflexes front and imaging (correctly or otherwise) that multi-player is just going to be full of trigger-happy idiots killing indiscriminately.

Does anybody else just play solo? Also it would be interesting to hear if anybody thinks my perceptions of multi-player are completely wrong too :)

I've spent 99% of my time in open play, and I've had only been attacked maybe two or three times. All of these attacks where near freeport and I survived two of them with 100% hull (I boosted to safety and jumped to another system).

In recent weeks I've been grinding out trade runs in a type 6 and lately a type 9, and because I spend a lot of time away from the core systems I hardly ever bump into other players and when I do they are fellow traders.

The impression you get from the forums is that you get atomised the moment you spawn in - this couldn't be further from the truth. If you don't want to be attacked simply avoid Freeport and the conflict zones in Eranin and Dahan.

Multiplayer everytime.

I've been through huge distances and i didn't have so many problems with idiot players.
Of course they are some drawbacks due to loading times but multiplayer isn't accomplished yet : when there will be some grouped PVE missions and more interactions between players I can assure you solo will be left far behind.

PB was solely multiplayer on line. Beta mostly on solo. Played the original Elite and a bit slow, I went to solo to practice my combat, I found in multiplayer on line in my starter sidie I was always being jumped by someone in a better ship within a few seconds of joining something like the FDS.

Solo only for me and unless a couple of friends I trust join up that's the way it will stay.

The technical issues alone are enough to keep me playing solo but despite a concerted effort from some on these boards to have open play only I see no reason to play in open mode.

The griefing in this game has the potential to be epic.......solo yes.....friends yes.....open play no

Playing mixed.
But stability
Hate taking a fully loaded , decked out Conda, and instance, game or whatever leaves you with an unresponsive client.
So USS scavenging online, big expensive cargoloads offline. And its not fear of pirates , its more the other thingie.
Hopes it gets sorted.

Cheers Cmdr's

Play both, although waiting at I Bootis spaceport (can't remember the name) with a group of hollow ships was different, the wait wasn't bad but no chat though. As I am working the trading credit climb at the moment, it's mainly solo with the occasional dip into multi-player when I feel I need for human presence...even silent presence. Never been ganked or griefed in multiplayer (unlike some other MMO's I've played)

I used to play ALL mode but due to connection problems recently I tend to play solo mode.

But IMO the best part of E:D will be ALL mode.

Hope that netcode will improve and connection/lag problems will be solved.

Ive played Solo. and the game runs smoother when in transition from supercruise to normal space or when ever the instance is changing.
Il guess it has to do whit the peer to peer so I dont have to share bandwidth.

Ive played Open play quite some time but I don't like the fact that I can get attacked no matter where iam.
Ive been killed 2 times in federal space around a station where I thought it was safe. One time I lost everything so I had to start over. But I accept that its part of the game in open play.
But its not my cup of tea.

So I went into a private group that focus around PvE, so I don't risk loosing everything due to some miscreants. And that group suits more my style of gaming. To play Whit others rather than against everyone.
