Do you own an Orca, what do you use it for.

One of the things Ive been looking forward too since I first saw them are the Passenger liners.

Orca, Dolphin, Beluga. mentioned earlier in the ED development, we have the Orca flyable now.

Do you own one, if you do, what are you using it for.
Passengers and passenger V.I.P missions are not here yet.

I was expecting more to have been added in the release version to be honest, especially this.
I wanted to be grinding to buy a passenger ship, taking passengers on trips, researching to find a "safe route" away from anarchy systems, maybe even hiring NPC wings for escort duties, risky missions with VIP passengers.
ED is released now, why was the Orca introduced in Gamma, for what purpose.

What is happening with regards the Dolphin.
Now don't get me wrong, i am enjoying playing what we have now, the launch went sublimely, the game is beautiful, it's just quite a few things still lacking i thought we would have had for the release version or soon after or at least some info on when we get them.

i saw this list on another post, a few things like this are what is needed as well.
Loving it now, but i don't want to be in the position of not playing in the future and just waiting for new stuff to come so i can pick it up again.
Now we have release, now we need info, a road map of what is to come, and roughly when.

  • Local chat (station / system)
  • Job specific global chat (trading, bounty hunting, mercenary, exploration)
  • Guild / corp / wing features and chat
  • Parties e.g. spontaneous small groups of players
  • Cooperative multiplayer missions
  • Shared bounties in wings, even to have wings.
  • Group interdictions
  • Trading between players, credits
  • Locating friends and party members on radar / map

And really, if you own an Orca. WHAT are you doing with it.......

EDIT: Just seen that the orca is not even on the Galnet news ships page,
https://www.elitedangerous.com/shipyard/ships/
so whats happened, has it been removed from the game. (yet sure i saw one since release).

I don't own the Orca, far from it actually, but I'm an explorer working my way to get myself one of these, kitted out for exploration of course. I don't really care for any more exploration oriented ship, the Orca just looks so cool.
Although, knowing myself, I don't think I'll be able to restrain myself from buying the Asp once I reach the 6 million credits milestone.

Although its a nice looking ship I've personally no plans to get one anytime soon since I would rather go exploring. One thought did occur to me though and that is that it would be a very good ship for transporting large amounts of slaves from a to b since very few people would imagine such an luxurious looking ship being used for such illegal activities ;)

I was thinking about that these days -- you see people talk a lot about most ships, but not much about the Orca. You who fly it, how is it? Is it fun? Is the cockpit pretty? Are it's viewports sexy? How awesome is it?

I had an Orca once, Dept of Wildlife Fish and Game made me release it. :D

All kidding aside can't see the need for one until we can board other ships and party.

I found the Orca to be a surprisingly practical ship, pretty damn fast too.
Shields aren't great, comparable to an unboosted ASP/Dropship shields (with an A grade in their largest internal slot -source).
Decent hardpoints, the front large is really nice the hull curves nicely for it and a gimball really get a lot out of it, but the other 2 medium ones are while decently placed, are hindered slightly by being a bit further back.

Can trade reasonably, can be used in combat even piracy and smuggling. (And one day, maybe actual passengers).
Quite versatile.

And yes, it's really nice to look at and imo quite fun to fly.
It's not unknown for me to fly about looking for a good time, while carrying an assortment of guns, girls and booze for no other reason than my own amusement at the situation haha.

Long story short - you can do a lot with an Orca

I currently fly like this. Lets me do whatever takes my fancy at the time.
And I'm enjoying my fresh new Graphite paint job.

Here's mine. Just got back to Lembava and dropped off 255 scanned systems. Made a 2.5k ly trip out. Since I cant take passengers I've converted it into a drop ship for officers. I was in the black when 1.3 hit so not pledged anywhere yet but will be using it as a trader /mission ship. I have almost enough for a Python but I reckon I'll fly my Orca for a bit longer. Just armed her for the first time with a F3 turreted pulse laser and 2 B2 missile racks. Upgraded the power plant to A5 and thrusters to C6 with the profits from the exploration trip.

It needs Missions obviously, like tourist trips to amazing places/sights (a bit like Slaves), multiplayers onbaord 1 ship, hitch a ride to a far away system you can not get to (like when you don't have enough credits), trip to planet surface, etc.
So also mining still improving to get that gold rush feeling it deserves.
Surely some small ships could fit inside the cargo hold of others.

I had one on a previous save.

It was a joy to fly, very fast, quite maneuverable, decently armed. The cockpit, or should I say the control room is lovely, especially the canopy.
And the sounds, man, the sounds. The engine in regular speed is nice, the boost makes a nice little "Bing" just before the engine starts screaming.

You really can feel the quality of the ship, and understand why it is so expensive.

I used it for ... nothing really. I tried bounty hunting, it was ok. Jump range is too short for rare trading. Regular trading is meh, an Asp (edit : not the Asp, the Type 7) does a better job. I saw people say it was good for pirating smaller and faster ships, because it is fast and has 2 mediums and one large hardpoint.

To sum up, I recommend trying one. Even though it has no proper role, it is a pleasure to fly, and I enjoyed every minute of my little vacations away from my bounty hunting Dropship.

I use my Orca "Lucky Strike" for Mining; there's not a lot else to do with one, you either mine or explore with it.

It makes a Bing noise like a commercial airliner "Fasten Seatbelts" when you hit boost, not joking; and it's much faster than my Python, other than that it just looks cool and is very fun to fly if you don't have the credits/hour mindset.

Of course it'd take nearly 100 mining trips to break even on the investment...so that's 6 down 94 to go! Don't think of it as mining so much as fishing while you check the forums etc.

Judging by the traffic reports I've seen, there are no player orcas in game yet.

not true, I know someone who has an orca, and he used it in the past to ram people with, I'll have to ask him if he still has it

I also just ran into an CMDR with an orca in Lembava 2 days ago, he had a 700k bounty and interdicted me, I barely made it out in my diamondback explorer with a high wake jump.

so my experience so far is Orca may be a good LOL ship

Having flown one for a bit I can add the following:

Bonuses:

  • Decent Cargo
  • Very fast
  • Looks great
  • Large Hardpoint
  • A cockpit that actually looks good for once

Drawbacks:

  • Cant land at outposts
  • Very poor jump range
  • small fuel tank
  • weak shields
  • Type 6 compartment has restricted use. You can only use it for a hull reinforcement package or cargo rack.

While I was out exploring I had to refuel at every star I could fuel from because the tank is so small, one jump drains a third of the fuel. The plus side of that is it takes seconds to refuel even with a cheap scoop. The ship is only really viable with an A rated FSD. Its practically useless with anything less so if you want to get one, you need to budget for that A5.

So far I have avoided all interdictions by just flying away as the excellent top speed is great for escaping NPC's. I don't play open so I don't know if there are more issues in open play.

It's not a great ship but its fun to fly something challenging for a while and it surely beats the abysmal lakon cockpits with their prison bars and metal brick aesthetics.

Just picked up and kitted my own orca. Im off to explore the lagoon nebula! I am very excited for the 2.2 and cruise liner mission hype!
