Hey Cmdrs, I was wondering on the way into work this morning how many of us in here can play FPS style games in VR. I know quite a few of us cant do it at all or can play for 20-30 minutes or so, and there's also a few of us who can without issues. I am curious to know roughly what the ratio is and figured I'd start a poll.
So for clarity, I mean FPS games like Subnautica, Fallout series, GTAV, Dying LIght, Dishonoured etc.

Thanks!

No issues whatsoever. Even Mirror's Edge with Vorpx and length of play is not an issue.

TF2 = VR = Fun.

Use with mouse and keys. Hate eggbox controllers.

I've had a play about with Alien Isolation with the VR tweak..

Very atmospheric.... and expensive on the laundry bills....

Ive completed Alien, logged dozens of hours in Skyrim, Time Rifters and HL2 back when it worked. Fun and no problems at all. Some friends who tried Alien did experience some kind of vertigo, but that's from lack of experience I guess.

I just started Alien Isolation too, love it! I have no issues with fps games, other than sitting does not feel right. So when I had DK1, I developed this "poor mans holodeck" :) I call it "gesture walking" or "pseudo walking". I played Doom3 fully through with it and had a blast, planning to convert script to Alien Isolation and share it. Here is old video with some explanation, sorry wrong aspect ratio.
Doom3BFG with Rift and DIY gesture walking: http://youtu.be/jI266___lNk

Getting Doom BFG working on Oculus dk2 seems like an impossible task.

Only crap I found was that useless github nonsense. I tried it a few times and nothing. No worky.

The only mod for doom BFG seems to be really old stuff that works on the first oculus runtime.

I've played Alien Isolation with the built in broken VR support and with Vorpx. World scaling is totally wrong unless hacked and someone posted a reddit with instructions for that.

I tried Alien Isolation felt quite bad nausea within 10 mins of playing but this was my first fps experience with the DK2

Dying light I could play for a little longer, I really was looking forward to experience what it would be like stood on a high building looking down to see if it gave a good sense of height.

It's unfortunate your first experience with VR was a bad one. I'm very used to VR and have tried just about everything for Oculus but Alien Isolation is just plain bad without correction. World scaling is too small, tracking is pretty bad.

Dying light has the scaling ok but of course the tracking is awful.

I found Dying light a more comfortable experience but nothing like a proper VR experience. It's a shame your first VR wasn't Half Life 2.

I play a lot of first person games, not just shooters, in VR. Never had an issue personally and the few of the polls I have seen recently seem to indicate that the majority do not either - the polar opposite of what some VR devs would have you believe when they try to enforce "confort modes" or "teleportation locomotion". The games I play / have played include Alien Isolation, Dying Light, Skyrim, ESO, Dishonored, BioShock 3, HLVR (HL2 Modded for VR) and Battlefront (2015). Most of which I have used third party injectors to play them on.

I didnt know Battlefront has been enabled. VorpX?

Yes I must admit before I tried anything in first person I presumed it wouldnt work. But like yourself I now play first person games all the time now and Im getting a little concerned developers will just assume nobody wants a first person experience in a traditional movement sense or if they do then it will need teleportation or something similar. Certainly you tend to hear more from folk who have had a rough experience saying VR is not compatible with FPS (for them at least) on forums generally, as happy campers tend to not bother posting as they are happy out.

However just thinking now, isnt crytek releasing The Climb at launch which is first person? Ah maybe Im worrying about nothing.

Thanks grammatonfeather, but just my first fps experience with VR. I have been enjoying ED with the DK2 / without any nausea since Jan 15 and tried Alien & Dying Light many many months after that. Maybe if I had persevered with them I may of gotten over the nausea but just felt with that type of games VR was not quite right or right for me

Injectors. Which means vorpx or vireio perception. I didn't get on well with vireio. Annoying trying to remember the correct spelling and the list of supported games was very small. Vorpx is very good.

"I now play first person games all the time now and Im getting a little concerned developers will just assume nobody wants a first person experience in a traditional movement sense" << Let's hope not. HL2 and TF2 are great in VR. I want to see Battlefield with native VR, Mirror's Edge, Arma....

The problem is those two games have broken VR so the "nausea" feeling is more understandable for those susceptible. Both games are badly broken in VR. They both have bad tracking and Isolation has completely wrong world scale.

You shouldn't be judging FPS from two broken games.

Now if you have nausea with HL2 then you do have a problem.

Alien Isolation in VR is no joke. I don't get scared at movies, other games, etc. All those jump scares in doom 3...nothing. But with a VR headset on...? I don't even know if I'd call it "fun," It's awesome, but not in that "wheeee I'm having fun," kind of way. It's more like that "HOLY @*(#&% THAT @%@#%# ALIEN MOTHER %#@ PIECE OF @%# I'M GOING TO @#% YOU SONOFA@q#% JESUS CHRIST WHY DO I KEEP PLAYING THIS @(%@#* GAME," kind of way.

Like Lestenio above, I'm really looking forward to adding a nice Omni-treadmill to the ole setup. I see a whole lot of more "healthy" video game playing in my future.

Yes, I was just gonna post about it.

I had contacted Bohemia last year about VR and they said they were a small developer but that VR was something they would look into for the future.

I guess they completed their looking and are now getting down to it.

A space game? Surely not a full space combat sim along the lines of Elite or SC? I mean they already have one Space sim still in development.

I played Alien Isolation on the PS4. When using the TV speakers it was pretty good. When I switched to headphones it was unplayable. Gave me nightmares, they did an awesome job with the sound. I deliberately didn't complete the game and purchased it for the PC with the intent on playing in the rift and the omni. It's the first game on my list to play when everything arrives.

This time next year, omni owners will be the fittest people on the planet. :)

You should try playing with a Buttkicker - you can feel the damn beast getting closer and closer, the ceiling thudding with each step, the ground shaking as it gets closer. I think I spend most of my time in lockers.. scared to come out... amazing that a game can do that to a man. It's the single most scary experience I have ever had.

My only FPS experience in the Rift is Alien Isolation, if that counts as a FPS (there isn't really much shooting). Had no problems with nausea. Sphincter control on the other hand...

Bought The Witness yesterday. Not really S, but certanly FP. Looks very nice in VR. Not exactly polished, but playable. In itself Myst-like collection of puzzles in mysterious setting.
