I am having a lot of fun with Elite, and have not been shy in the least about expressing this with my friends and others at my place of employment. I picked up ED for Christmas, and at the time was having a great time with another large franchise game that just been released. For this Other Game, I was extremely enthusiastic in telling everyone who has ever played anything remotely similar should get this Other Game. *
And yet with Elite, as much as I love the game ... I am having difficulty fully endorsing it to others as something I think they would like. Or rather, as something they should spend $60.
That is not to say my endorsement makes much different, but I feel slightly guilty to have the hesitation when I talk about it. "You can hunt pirates in asteroid belts! (really RES in rings)" and recounting other adventures I've had... and then... then there is that hesitation. "I think you'd like it... I'm not sure you'd like it now, not at the current price."
I want to support ED as much as possible, to talk it amongst those who might be interested. Yet, to me, it seems like a product that may forever be a niche. And niches are okay. i hope the niche can prosper.
The main point is, I tell me friends good things about Elite, but it just doesn't strike me as a game which will have broad appeal. And that's probably a good thing.
What do you tell your rl friends?
* the Other Game is Dragon Age: Inquisition
