Do you recommend Elite to your friends?

I am having a lot of fun with Elite, and have not been shy in the least about expressing this with my friends and others at my place of employment. I picked up ED for Christmas, and at the time was having a great time with another large franchise game that just been released. For this Other Game, I was extremely enthusiastic in telling everyone who has ever played anything remotely similar should get this Other Game. *

And yet with Elite, as much as I love the game ... I am having difficulty fully endorsing it to others as something I think they would like. Or rather, as something they should spend $60.

That is not to say my endorsement makes much different, but I feel slightly guilty to have the hesitation when I talk about it. "You can hunt pirates in asteroid belts! (really RES in rings)" and recounting other adventures I've had... and then... then there is that hesitation. "I think you'd like it... I'm not sure you'd like it now, not at the current price."

I want to support ED as much as possible, to talk it amongst those who might be interested. Yet, to me, it seems like a product that may forever be a niche. And niches are okay. i hope the niche can prosper.

The main point is, I tell me friends good things about Elite, but it just doesn't strike me as a game which will have broad appeal. And that's probably a good thing.

What do you tell your rl friends?

* the Other Game is Dragon Age: Inquisition

No. I like it quite a bit myself, but I know most of my friends don't share my taste in games. They're more in the Call of Duty/Farcry 4 part of the spectrum, and all really disliked my past recommendations (Civilization, XCOM, Crusader Kings, etc.).

I did tell my friends about it in the beginning and after having two of them come and go, I've held off on pumping the horn any more.
It's still too niche. You have to really like the idea to see past the oversights (imo).
If they fleshed out a few more of the features or simply went with some different overall design decisions, then things may have been or may be different. But for now, its kind of like flightsims. My own thing.

I would love to recommend ED to any one but honestly even if the game was fully fleshed out, which let's be honest it isn't to any degree, I still wouldn't tell most of my gaming friends to get it. Nor would I want to. Games like these don't want to appeal to that standard "CoD crowd" of instant gratification locusts. At least I don't think it wants to. If someone I knew wanted to get into space and enjoyed games like Freelancer, X3 and the like - then sure I would in a heart beat. ED has a long road ahead of it, and hopefully can dominate and revitalized the space sim genre again, but it will never gain the kind of player base and loyalty that most of these cash cow, and ultimately shallow triple A titles get. Player's don't want to be challenged, they want to be told they are the best out of the blocks. ED is the antithesis of that mentality.

Yes I do ...
...although I make sure they know my opinion is that it is currently less than 1/3 of what will be the final game.
Space (which hasn't even been finished yet) + planetary and station content + EVA (1st person, 3rd person, other vehicles...)

It was easier to encourage people to buy in when the expansion pass was available, now not so much.

I have recommend Elite to my friends who enjoy space sims and flight sims. But I do make sure to mention some of its rougher edges at the same time.

I do recommend it to everyone who will listen, and explain why it works for me, but recognize that it's not for everyone.

In general I don't recommend any game to anyone... tastes differ - so they'll have to figure out the good and bad themselves.

Pretty much this. I am very enthusiastic about the game to my friends. But i don't tell them they should get it unless they are into this sort of game. Its quite a niche game in its own way, and not to everyone's taste. I mean, for one, it requires you have an imagination. People without an imagination are not going to enjoy the game.

I talk about ED like it's one to keep an eye on. Even though it's released, I tell those who ask to treat it more as a beta in terms of content, that it's a pretty limited experience right now but that the best (hopefully) is yet to come.

I am one of those people who for some reason, even though pretty much my main entertainment is gaming, has mostly friends who don't play computer games at all.
Even if I did recommend it to them all they would hear is "There he is going on about his computer games again.,.,."
TBH I feel lucky to have GF who doesn't feel threatened by gaming. Some in the past have, including the ex wife, even though they were always encouraged to join in. Weird.
Anyway tl;dr - yes I would, but they wouldn't care.....

^^Absolutely this!^^

OP - If you have good friends then absolutely mention it if you think they would enjoy it and it would appeal to them. If not, don't. Simples.
Them not liking it, for whatever reason, should not in any way be a reflection of your poor taste or character. If they give you grief because it turns out they didn't like it... that's their problem, not yours.

Top tip - You can generally tell if your friends are good because they won't tell you something like "I bought this space game right and I tried it and I it sucks yeah and I went on to the forums and told everyone what i thunk yeah because [insert reason here] sucks so you shouldn't buy it because I have just told you it sucks right!".

:)

recommend? no, but I do talk about it with some. I've brought over a few players that way that are very happy with the experience so far.
I'd rather have people know that it exists and decide for themselves if they want to try it than to recommend to someone to spend money and have them complain that it's not what they expected.

I'm personally a bit angry at myself for not even hearing about this game before late July, but can't change the past and at least I've been having fun for already several months and hopefully it's just begun.

I generally do recommend games that I enjoy to my friends. With ED, although I talk lots about it, I am more hesitant. I myself am enjoying the game lots but the thing is that I feel it's a game for a certain type of player. It's not for everyone and I feel that especially the casual and console gamers may have a hard time to get the game and why it appeals so much to us. Another thing is that Elite is a slow game. You don't play it for half an hour a session. And if I want to show a friend the game and the different activities you can do within the game (including mining, exploration, ...), it takes at least an hour or so.

When I do want to tell someone about the game I am always wondering what youtube links I could send them. Frontier's cinematic launch trailer? One of Isinona's great videos? Haven't really found a video that combines all the different aspects of the game to give a good overview to someone who never heard of Elite before.

Don't get me wrong now i love this game, but it's just so far from finished. Updates like "wings" are really not supposed to be updates, but just standard stuff to have in a multiplayer game such as this.

I see the potential and i roll along on faith alone, that the devs will make this game absolutely amazing, but to be honest i have difficulty with some of their development priorities so far. 400 billion star systems, but you basically play alone.

People hear about my Elite addiction. Come over and see it in my environment. 4K 65" with Home theatre surround and they make their own mind up. As it is I have 4 friends that have bout it. But most of them are not really heavy players like I am.

I recommend it, but I warn them of what I think they should be aware, and I come to the forums to comment and criticize the game so I can make sure we all try and get a better experience :)
