It keeps coming up as a topic, but how widespread is the problem? Of course, when people suffer from it, they want to express their frustration about it, so post about it, and so the problem looks major.

Its like threads about cheaters and griefers - they make the problem seem much worse than it really is, and people start thinking that there are cheaters and greifers everywhere!

Is this the same as those, or is it a really common issue? From the threads on the topic, here, on reddit, on Steam, it certainly seems like it is a serious problem.

But some of us, it just doesn't seem to happen to.

So, are you a regular victim of scan and ram by NPCs?

PS: Not really counting if it happened to you once. Occasional accidents can always happen even with the best AI, and depending on your own manouvering. Talking about you flying along, not doing crazy manouvers, and an still getting rammed by NPCs who are scanning you

Also, you might list which ship(s) you were flying when it happened.

For me, i don't recall a single instance of this happening to me (before i set off on Distant Worlds... no NPCs out here), and i spent many hours in RES, docking, running missions, etc between the release and 2.0 before leaving the bubble.

During that time i was mainly flying a Dropship or FdL. Medium ships.

A bit of everything but fly mostly Python. Lately found myself in a FDS and no problems in that either. But when trading in a Cutter it also doesn't happen or atleast not that often. A bit more frequent than in my Python or FDS though.

I often ram my targets when I pirate aswell. Am I part of the problem? [noob]

Python, DBX, Anaconda, Asp. Have been in all sizes and shapes of ships, and ever since sometime after 2.0, the NPC forgot how to scan and drive at the same time. Most notable in Nav Beacons, where police, pirate and bounty hunter alike can't seem to dodge your ship, if you change speed/trajectory after they set out to come to you. Not to mention their adamant nature of trying to scan you while hovering in front of you.

At stations is happens less often, but it's quite common to hear the idiot viper approach and then get deflected off a) my shields b) the station walls.

It happens pretty often. Honestly, this doesn´t even need a poll. There was a change in NPC behavior around 2.0 time or so.

I suspect the AI was supposed to be helped by the boost + scan routine to catch more people who tried to boost away from scanners (pure speculation here). This was around the time that smuggling was big news after all... But it had a knockoff effect of making them into ramming jacktards. And make no mistake, this is very, very annoying for new players especially. They don´t have ships that can always survive those unnecessary love-bumps. Imagine undocking in your sidewinder for the first time and getting killed by npc police ram... What would you think about the game at that moment?

I've had it happen once. I was returning from a couple of months in the black and my Asp had taken a beating so I knew to run with 4 pips to shields and go slow. Sure enough I get the scan then a ram... He came of worse.

Not had it happen since so had to vote no.

In bigger Ships around Stations, it frequently happens as I "can't make space" for a Security Viper suddenly Afterburning into me from <1.5km or especially any frontal approach vector.

But I've adapted fairly well, got my scanner setup during arrivals/departures and know which NPC scenarios are most likely to result in a collision-vector scan.
Usually I manage to either avoid them by some margin or be <100m/sec when they slam into my Ship at high speeds.

Happens rather frequently, around Stations, during Mining or most pronounced in any RES simply due to the repeated larger number of scanning NPCs.
Very well adapted to some of the more intertia-ridden NPCs making a scan-ram approach, usually I manage to make it a close high-speed pass instead of a direct hit (Federal Dropships/Gunships, some Asps, often Anacondas - seeing them approaching I already know they're on a dead-collision vector and we'd meet at >100m/sec if I wouldn't do anything).
Sitting still in a HazRES would likely cause dozens of scan-rams per hour.

Still, despite all caution sometimes they can surprise me, got me a few "Reckless flying" Fines when a Viper suddenly thought it would need to attain >300m/sec Vc for its scan from fairly close range...
In these "surprise scan-attacks", there's essentially nothing I can do in big Ships and being over 100m/sec, thinking I was clear of the Station's "Scan-to-Ram zone".

PS.
Luckily/surprisingly, no Ship ever blew up after making a Kamikaze-Scan and slamming into my Anaconda or Corvette at max. speed.
Often takes 2 rings off their Shields but I've yet to see an NPC that actually manages to go *splat* on my Ships.

Had tons of NPCs in HazRES take off my Shields with Scan-Ramming though, to me that's a completely normal occasion.
When fighting a Wing of 3 or more in a furball, I just have no way to recognize an Anaconda NPC zooming in on a straight collision vector coming out of nowhere.
Then, "Scan Detected" is occasionally followed by a huge impact 2-3sec later - but at least I got the Warning before it happens ;)

I get it happening occasionally usually at Nav beacons or Res sites. It mostly happens in the larger ships but I was only yesterday at a Nav beacon with my FDL stationary (recharging shields) and a NPC Bounty hunter lost his shields and 25% hull of his cobra I laughed when he warned me he would be keeping an eye on me :D

I have had a couple of fines for reckless flying but I am not sure whether it was due to my bad piloting skills or over zealous cops.
So in my experience it does happen but not so often to make it a huge issue.

On a side note I really miss the 'super cop' that would open fire without scan and chase you over multiple systems :/ Did he finally get sacked :(

Don't know about scanrams, but I've had system defence Anacondas jump right in front of me on interdiction submission. My ieldless Cobra just boosted - no way to evade this

It used to at stations until I learned to keep my speed below 100 until I was away from the NPCs

It used to in CZ and HR until I started giving them one with the heid and two with the bunnet, first. Now they leave me alone. [praise]

Heh, I've been undertaking less than legal activities recently, so at the first sign of a scan I tend to hit boost a few times and then wake out... so I don't really give them a chance to ram me.

Go to a res site in an asteroid belt and sit there without moving. You will be constantly rammed by fuzz, wanteds and cleans as they scan you. Best to try this at a high or hazardous res site as there is more traffic there. The high being preferential as it has fuzz as well.

I dont get scan and ramed, even in an Anaconda or The Python that I had before. I always keep an eye on the scanner. If a ship is running in my derection I move.

I always use the scanner to defend myself. I can see the way the other ships are moving. I dont have headtracker, so I always keep an eye on the scanner.

I have got rammed in combat. New tactic from NPCs.

Only happened to me once and it was more a scan and bump (lost one ring of my Asp's shields). Thankfully I was not doing any "shady" missions at the time.

Sat outside a station a few km out. Not moving just checking a text or waiting for a friend and bam.... Oh look I'm wanted for a week because a crazy Eagle went splat on my windscreen.

That's odd. The only times I've gotten wanted from a ram scan were when I was going over the speed limit. I've accidentally vaporised little ships when going into the slot and no fines.
