General / Off-Topic Do you think people who own dachshunds and dress them up in costumes to make them look like hotdogs should be prosecuted?

Ive seen some brilliant Halloween ones, a dog half eaten by an alligator, but at any other time they should be left alone...

Dogs do not need raincoats or fluffy warm coats, they have something called fur....

And it is always allowed to put 1 pair of glasses on a dog,....as long as thats understood hang the rest from the highest yardarm!

As long as the Dog or any other animal is not distressed or harmed in anyway, I do not think its particularly cruel or obscene. The only time I do draw the line though with "costumes" is when you put socks or anything of the sort on their feet, that causes a great deal of stress for them, especially to dogs and cats.

Dying of hair and all that, yeah most dye's are very toxic to animals, there are non-toxic ones and I supposed if you are not hurting, harming, distressing or killing the animal. Yeah it's fine.

I do abhor cruelty of any kind, whether animal or human.

I do very much have an issue with streamers/influencers etc doing it because most of the time there are some who are dangerously narcissistic and would not consider the wellbeing of anyone else, including pets (especially when their "pet" is their source of income etc)

I'm a strong believer in personal property rights. So if it's yours, it's yours to modify or destroy as you see fit.

I think it's cruel and obscene to even create most of these animals in the first place (one of the reasons the few pets I've had in my adult life have come from rescues and why I have a very dim view of most breeders), but my respect for a person's right to their property trumps my personal distaste with what they do with it.

I think that all these pictures you've posted are of your animals and you are facing prosecution for it and you're on here, whining, looking for support, probably want one of us to go to court with you and stand as a character witness based on the fact we 'know' you from these forums.

I'm game.

You are not serious ?

In France, new laws will be voted against this kind of thing.

Morbad I'm noticing a very serious and somewhat somber tone in your replies to the questions posed in these forum threads am I right in guessing you don't get invited to parties much?

Just to clarify: you're saying that dogs should have no rights and are essentially private property which their owners can dispose of however/whenever they see fit? So, for instance, the owner could just plug 'ol Fido if they felt like cutting back on the feed bill?

Yes.

The unfortunate reality--of selecting for harmful deformities, generation after generation, for purely aesthetic reasons--is quite a bit more gruesome.

I don't make any arbitrary distinctions between companion animals and other animals (people balk at harming cats or dogs, but pigs are at least as smart and 1.5 billion of them are slaughtered per year, with millions more destroyed for all sorts of reasons), nor do I see the value in having intermediate classifications between person and object. As far as I am concerned, either it's a person (a distinction not necessarily limited to humans, but most-capacity based criteria effectively rule out non-humans), in which case it should not be owned in any sense, or it's an object fully subject to ownership.

Personally, I tend to anthropomorphize my animals and treat them as people, but I cannot rationally expect others to view them the same way. Fortunately, they don't have to; all they need to know is that my animals are property I value and that I feel entitled to defend my property by any and all means at my disposal.

Laws on the topic are often inconsistent and poorly reasoned, arbitrarily elevating some animals above others, generally being based on prevailing cultural mores rather than any attempt at empiricism. Enforcement is equally arbitrary and frequently absent...often only brought up as a pretext for harassment or investigating/penalizing unrelated crimes.
