Docking change

I know the forum today will just be full of 1.1 threads, but I've been meaning to comment on docking for a while.

I really don't think we should be able to bounce our ships around like ping pong balls when landing.

If I linger for a brief second over the wrong pad (usually because the right one has no holo) then I get threats and warnings from the station, but they're absolutely fine with me smashing hundreds of shielded tons of ship into the pad then the control tower.

Ideally doing this would damage or destroy me, but a fine for wreckless flying would at least give me an incentive to be more careful. I wish I had to be.

Another alternative would be to say shields needed to be disabled to land, which would make sense as I don't know how you'd land with a shield around your ship.

BTW I'm not one of these people who wants everything MOAR DANGEROUS, I can understand the difference between a frustrating mechanic and a difficult mechanic. I just find this a bit immersion breaking.

Imagine if you were on a plane and the pilot landed it by lazily smashing it off the tarmac until it stopped.

Most of them do. Have you ever flown RyanAir?

I heard tell of a case when a plane had a very heavy landing. The captain was too embarrassed to stand by the door as the passengers dis-embarked, so the co-pilot did this task. One little old lady asked him "Tell me, young man. Did we land, or were we shot down?".

I hope you're going to come and clean up this tea!?

+1!

Maybe the 1.1 trailer could be extended so you see the t9 enter the station to deliver the 0.125 ton of metal it just scooped and enter too fast, bouncing around inside before magically locking on to land. Would be more authentic that way.

Hey, I know of a 747 that landed so hard it drove the landing gears into the wings.

Why is it immersion breaking? you can change it yourself by shutting your shield off when you deploy your landing gear. There you go, no more "immersion" broken. As for a pilot landing a plane by smashing it off the tarmac until it stopped...have you ever seen a plane landing on a carrier? :D

If you cant land without "bouncing your ship around like ping pong balls" the you should practice that!! Its not difficult to land successfully it just needs more care.

But I do agree with you in a way, as you should be careful otherwise you could damage your ship. BUT for the beginners this is good as while your learning to dock you dont break your ship and have to respawn and buy another (if you had upgrades).
There are pro and cons but i think its better as it is for the "newbies".

Would you play a game if you kept dieing or loosing your ship because you couldnt land it properly?

That isn't a landing, it is a pre-planned controlled crash (with safety nets!).

OK, where in the galaxy are you? I suppose I will need to also get some more tea for you, so what is your preference?

I also recall reading an Aussie story when a plane had a very bumpy landing (several touch-downs!). Once they had come to the end of the runway, about to taxi to the terminal, the stewardess said on the tannoy "Thank you for flying Crash Airways. Please remain seated while Captain Kangaroo taxis what remains of the aircraft to the terminal".

I fault you, sir .... now I have to clean the coffee spills I just spouted all over my keyboard.
Anyway, have a rep for a spontaneous laugh :D

At no point did I say I couldn't. In fact it would be pretty weird if I was asking for consequences to poor landing if I wasn't actually able to land well. Can't tell if you just didn't read the OP or wanted to deliberately misinterpret so you could jump in with a 'get better at the game' response.

The problem is that there is no penalty for not flying well, so after a while you just get sloppy. Getting sloppy when flying a spaceship should have a downside.

I think we've all had poor landings. Remembering that a Cobra won't slow down like a Sidey has caused me a few "Eeek!" moments as I fired myself kamikaze style towards the landing pads. Or when I kept accidentally turning off the rotational assistance control before I unbound it from my controller. Or after I'd somehow changed my speed from zero. Or when I caught the landing gear on that ramp next to the pad. Et cetera.

Imagine if a Cmdr struggling with his craft knocked off the tower radars, or kicked the lampposts flying, or squashed the roadway roofing? Proper damage!! Consequences could be fines for the pilot but also putting pads out of action for a while until they're repaired. Let's see some real carnage when we get inside some of the busy stations. LOL.
