Docking computers should help you undock and help you safely undock without crashing into npc's.

They are still working on it docking without it killing you first...

Take a look at the wreakage floating around inside a station. This is usually due to NPCs that have failed to exit the station properly, so they were destroyed by the station guns. Do you really want the same AI controlling your ship?

I exploded a lot trying to dock before I got the docking computer.

Never exploded undocking yet. Thou I've had a few bumps..

Is that what happens? I've heard things while docked, but never found a way to figure out what was even happening if I wasn't on the top deck, with cameras loose and pointed up.
