Docking Computer

To help the new players give them a docking computer in the onboard system, not taking up a slot, for the first 20 to 30 hours of gameplay to help folks get used to the controls and help with the learning curve. After that make it a quest for folks that want it.

You just want "Easy mode".

You just want "Lazy mode".

You need to "git gud" at docking.

The use of the Docking Computer needs to be "balanced" with the sacrificing of an internal compartment slot, not because it grants you any tangible advantage, but because *rgargrhgarghar* MURDERIZE THE AUTO-DOCKING SCUMZZZ!

Just some common responses you can expect to this oft requested change... :D

I'm all for an auto-docking feature integrated permanently into every ship by the way, but disabled by default. That won't impact anyone's play who doesn't want to use it, but that won't prevent them from vehemently continuing to oppose this proposal.

EDIT: I think that new players should perhaps be encouraged to become at least basically competent at docking, so maybe the integrated docking feature, if implemented, should be disabled for them until they successfully manual dock say, 10 times or so.

If your docking compter was built in you wouldnt be able to turn it off. There are times when you will want to stop your ship without the DC snatching control from you and causing you greif.

It could be integrated, but with the ability to enable and disable it from the right panel, and should be disabled by default.

Or another idea is to use the tutorials and practice before docking your ship.

docking is litteraly the easiest thing in the game, just look at the radar.

Needs to be removed completely. Letting the game dock your ship doesn't teach you how to fly.

Choosing to use auto-docking is not the same as not being competent at manual docking, which means that features, even flight-based features, can be evaluated on a basis other than whether they contribute to teaching you how to fly.

In any case, the suggestion was regarding the integration of the auto-docking function into the ship's computer, the merit of which is self-evident to those who'd want to utilise it, and the adverse consequences of which are effectively nil.

Better idea than removing it completely actually:

Make it rank locked!

that way you have to learn at least a tiny bit how to fly before having the right to use one.

That's actually an elegant solution. +1

It would help the case of having it as an integrated part of your ship's computer, disabled by default, with the ability to enable it only becoming available once you've reached the required rank.

That way there shouldn't be any of the usual concerns about players not getting good at flying if the docking computer is made freely available in all ships, without the use of a separate module.

Maybe not Rank lock but Ship locked. Maybe a type 9 it would be unlocked.

What's the intended purpose? Is it because larger ships take more skill to dock without incident? If so, then that would just be providing easy mode when things start to get a little more challenging.

The rank lock could do a better job of ensuring players have the skill first. Like how some parents or teachers make sure that children can do arithmetic well enough in their heads before allowing them to use a calculator.
To gain the appropriate rank level, there could be a requirement of docking ships of each size within a certain time limit, at different gravity levels, and without collision, a certain number of times, rather than simply repeating a lot of docking for small ships until you get enough points.

From the lore side, this could be a Pilots Federation legal requirement for ensuring capable pilots and therefore higher safety.

Once you're competent at docking any sized ship, you should be able to switch on the integrated docking computer whenever you feel like it, in any kind of ship.

I fly a python with a DC, I can ping it through the slot at full speed if i like but at times I want the convenience of the ship docking itself and I can go grab a beer and snack from the fridge.

I'm happy with it taking a slot and I like the choice.

Plus even in 84 you could buy a DC!
