Docking computers take up an internal slot. What this means, is that if you want to use it, or actually need to use it, because you get nervous every time you have to dock, you forsake profitability. This keeps docking computers from being widely used. I think that just might be the reason why it takes up an internal slot. (I have only tried it out myself, and feel completely at ease landing myself. Just for the record.)
What if we had a separate computer slot? It could hold the Docking computer or any other computers that might come along, like for example:
- An ore scooping computer, that could keep track of where loose ores are in relation to you and provide a visible path to scoop them as efficiently as possible
- A navigation computer, that would allow you to build your own waypoint list manually and save it, so it is still there when you load, or keep a list of fav locations, for easy navigation
- An exploration database, that would keep a list of systems you have explored, display values and such for better organization of your exploring, or perhaps, if you have both the navigation computer and the exploration computer, you could display all your explored systems in the galactic map, marked out in .. say .. red or something.
Just a few ideas.. or even better... don't call it a computer slot, but make it a storage device, where you store your purchased programs. (Programs could be operating on a license and need renewal)
I fully understand how FD want to keep the game as much "hands on" as possible. None of these suggestions removes the need for players to do things themselves. They just facilitate different aids to the players.
