Docking conventions

Another thing I'll do in crowded stations is flash my lights as I'm approaching the slot (entering and leaving), just to warn any other players that I'm there. It's not always easy to spot other ships on the other side of the slot.

Is that even visible, though?

Yes you can see ships lights through the letter box.

Keeping the green lights to your left or right is irrelevant. It doesn't matter which way up you are. Just keep to the green side.

When did you last dock? NPC now follow the green-side rule, so does the docking computer. Exceptions: T-9, Anaconda and Clipper go center, no other ship will fit at the same time.

Though that is not really needed for the Conda. Two capable pilots should have no problems to fly their Condas through the slot at the same time. As for the OP and as others have said - try to get stuck with the green side. It helps, but in the end... always check your scanner and trust your own eyes.

You definately can fly two Anacondas through at the same time. You can also get two Anacondas and a Python through at the same time but it makes a mess of your shields and sounds pretty awful :)

Anything that can land on a small pad can easily fit past. Most of the small ships can rotate 90 degrees to the slot and use the narrow channel at the ends.

I actually exited past a T-9 once in a Python without a scratch by rotating at 45 degrees and placing one side well into the narrow channel. I wouldn't recommend it as a standard practice, but I can confirm that it can be done. I have had another commander tell me that 3 Anacondas can use the slot at the same time, but I've never done that, Two Anacondas is never an issue.

The slot is way bigger than you think.
