General / Off-Topic Doctor Who: 50th Anniversary

Lets hope they do this justice, the last series suffered a severe drop in quality.

Agreed.....They toned Matt Smith down ...Totally different personality from season one.....Made him dress like a 16 century doctor....cleaned up the tardis without any explanation......Basicly ruined it for me :(

I stuck with it through the Matt Smith stuff, and he did get better, I thought, But I have always preferred the more serious incarnations of the Doctor to the more "jokey" ones. Looking forward to the potential gravitas of Peter Capaldi with great eagerness.

Although a Malcolm Tucker style outburst may be funny, if a little jarring!

The last 2 seasons have completely passed me by, so I'll have to make time to catch up before the 50th Anniversary episode. Have they mentioned anything to do with the length or format at all? Is it going to be an extended episode?

Edit: I'm also very much looking forward to Capaldi's Doctor. When the list of bookie front-runners came out his name was the one that really stood out to most people I think.

The biggest issue for me was the Doctors companion. Can't even remember her name she was so bad, was it Tara? Hopefully the new Doctor will get a new companion.

The drop in quality was more noticeable because of how well he started. My favourite bit has to be when his assistant's using a scope and remarks to him, "Oh look! A little girl's crying. I guess you'll have taken some vow of non-interference and can't do anything to help"*, and then she notices that the Doctor has left the TARDIS to ask the girl why she was crying.

*quote is so badly remembered I can't google it to check accuracy

It's funny how opinions differ, I thought the new companion was so much better than Amy Pond...

Sarah Jane Smith, however, was the best of them all

This - I too struggled with Matt Smith a bit (he's a dead ringer for a young Michael Palin) - preferred both Ecclestone and Tennant.

Peter Capaldi should be just about right...

David Tennant as the Doctor had that air of menace about him. A sort of restrained ruthlessness, a darkness of the soul. When he threatened it was believable. The Matt Smith Doctor never convinced me he had those qualities. I am hoping that Peter Capaldi can restore some of those darker characteristics to the Doctor he portrays.

I never did like the Doctor being portrayed as a lovable buffoon as he sometimes was in previous regenerations.

Yes, nicely put. Totally with you on that.

I think the doctors were getting far to young looking, Peter Capaldi has that look that im happy with. but isnt a shame that John hurt isnt taking up the role for a few seasons as i think he would have made a great doctor.

on a side note David Bradley plays an uncanny william Hartnel.

When I first saw Matt Smith announced for 11 I thought, "Uh oh, he looks about 11... can this work?" - but he turned out to be my favourite since Tom Baker.

And now that Clara is no longer burdened with the Impossible Girl mystery she can flourish, given the chance.

Clara is quite sparky - was also a bit flirty with Matt Baker - not sure how that would look with Peter Capaldi though..

Do we know if she is definitely still in or up for replacement?
