Newcomer / Intro Does an explorer need to be on the lookout for 'treasure' cargo?

I haven't really explored yet, but I was wondering if there's any point bringing along lots of cargo space. Do you occasionally come across any goodies you can pick up, or are you 100% expected to earn your keep through discoveries?

The only thing i consider carrying back is occupied escape pods, and that only for roleplay. But it might attract npc pirates when you get back, so it is dangerous, plus hindering to your jump range. Of course these days maybe you can pick them up and deliver them to the closest fleet carrier out there..

Cargo can show up on the loneliest unexplored planets, however it is questionable that recovering it is worth the risk.
Any cargo other than limpets is possibly going to attract unwanted attention from pirates who also show up in the most unexpected places.

Cargo racks if empty don’t of course impact on your jump range so that doesn’t rule them out for an explorer and are Essential for limpets if you fit a repair limpet controller.

I take a 4t corrosive resistant cargo slot. Not worth collecting any known loot, but you don't want to be the one who finds something new and has to leave it behind.
And then theres the need for room for synthesis of repair limpets

I just kept the 32t cargo hold on the krait phantom. 23 weeks out in the black sea and it's still empty.
If your going to explore outside the bubble, there's no need for massive amounts of cargo space.
Heck, for that matter, the hold on my SRV is still empty too.
Quite a few of the material bins however are almost full. Guess I'll end up looking for a material trader in time.
