Does anybody hold a RANK IN BOTH NAVIES?

Good morning fellow spacefarers,

as I started a thread about showing your navy's colours in your commander's ID over at "dangerous suggestions" (thread-> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=83157) I touched the subject of people holding military ranks both with the Feds and the Imps... which is a most despicable thing, shame on you, commanders !

But on a more serious note:
Is it possible at the moment to be a member of both militaries? And if so, which specific ranks do you hold? Is there a limit for going both ways? (actually, I had to laugh when writing this, oh my, I'm silly... )

Yes it is possible. I'm "an Ensign" (or whatever the first rank is called) in the Federation and a "Serf" in the Empire.

If it is like Elite 2 or the previous games it should be no limits.

Arrrh, so it is indeed possible! Don't you find a bit morally flexible, shooting your own buddies, eh?

Yeah I know in FRONTIER you could rank up with both militaries without any problems, but honestly I always found that a bit cheesy... I mean maybe you don't check the background of PRIVATE 1st class Theodore Measly, but from an officer's rank upwards that just makes zero sense.

I would think that in order to attain this you would have to gain rep in ways that didn't involve shooting the other faction you were trying to stay friendly with. There are ways to gain rep without hurting the other.

I am a Midshipman with the Federation and Outsider with the Empire... though Outsider isn't much of a title.

Well i think shooting is the easiest way to get all 3 factionreps up. I do a lot of bountyhunting in Fedspace. From time to time i do a round to turn in the empire & alliance bountys i collect and get +rep for that. Noone hates me, but the criminal factions :)

How can you gain rank in both the federation and Imperial navy...!!!

How many of those who fought in many conflicts around the world, held ranks on both sides and engaged in operations. This isn't a good mechanic at all.

Reputation is one thing... rank is another and it's got to be one or the other.

This was passable when it was single player. The question is what it is today then. Where it wants to be. ;)

Excellent!

I hope to eventually become trusted by bot the Federation and the Empire, then do espionage for the alliance.

I'm thinking there should be a "Spy" Elite ranking system as well as for trading, exploring and combat. :D

"Morally flexible" is my middle name.

i got allied with major factions pretty fast. just from bounty hunting. then i just did a few missions and got 2 ranks in empire and 1 rank in fed.

Being ranked in 2 factions and viewing it moraly, i guess you could say your pilot is a peace keeper, helping both factions against pirates, terrorism etc etc. but never get involved in politics. Or helping one faction against the other.
That way i guess both factions could apreciate such a pilot.
When you start getting higher ranks, i fear a point will come when you have to decide on one of them.
It's a natural progression tho. I mean you spend time in empire, get a few ranks, then you find a girlfriend, or more likely, a SUPERB beer brewery in empire controled space which the feds want to attack(and your dream beer will be destroyed) so.. you know the rest.

FYI the empire and the federation have a joint special force called the INRA, Intergalactic Naval Reserve Arm.

It annoys me a bit that it's possible to 'max out' all faction ranks, and thereby gain access to all ships, with a single character. Faction gameplay becomes much more immersive and enjoyable when you know your comrades have invested in the same faction as you, and that you share the same enemies. Besides, it makes zero sense to be a high-ranked officer on both sides during a Cold War. If you join the Imperial Navy, then join the Federal Navy, the Imperial Navy should revoke your rank and become hostile to you.

I currently have Recruit with Federation, and Viscount with Empire. Frankly, I plan to be Empire focused, and it seems odd that I can hold rank in two Navies. I got the Federation rank by mistake. I had a few too many beers and took the Federation rank mission without paying attention to the faction (oops). I did the mission anyway as it happened to be easy. I already had the items to deliver in my hold. I then noticed I gained Federation rank. Oops

Hmm, so far mixed replies on whether ranking up in both navies is a good possibility... As I said from my point of view that feels just senseless from junior officer grades upwards.

All you double-rankers out there: Isn't that a bit immersion breaking? I mean we have no option for a spy network career (THAT WOULD BE AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MATTER, would love it !!!), so you just have to assume that both superpowers feel just fine with you ranking as an officer for the other side... Come on!

Exactly! All of these fundamentalists make it harder for us guys out there just looking for the fame fortune and rewards rank give! I have taken reputaion very seriously since gamma. I read a lot of people bummed over their rep, for whatever reason. I am very careful to build my rep in ways that do not decrease my rep with another major faction. It is possible, and from a "in this game you write your own narrative" viewpoint, works well.

I think it would be very cool to own a federal Dropship and an Imperial clipper! Only then do you become a TRUE mercenary! LOL

@Tronicus: You're talking mainly reputation, and to get me right: I have not the slightest problem with people getting an allied standing with all major factions and a few dozen independent minor ones... Great work, wooo :)

The military thing is another topic, however: It's just ridiculous that you can pledge for the Imperial Navy and the Federal Navy and hold a rank within their hierarchy at the same time... without any repercussions.

Maybe the whole immersion and inner logic thing doesn't fly so high for a lot of people... now I'm feeling old for the first time, dammit...

I gained a fed (*spit*) rank by purchasing and, *ahem*, 'delivering' two tons of fish without ever leaving the station. I was curious about ranks and regretted it immediately because I worried when Imperial ranks started working (this was a few weeks back) that I'd now be locked out. I've since gained 2 Imperial ranks.
