Years ago there was a very reflective chrome gold. This has apparently been replaced with the less reflective "golden."

I don't think so. The original gold was so shiny you could shave in it. The new golden looks much duller in comparison.
Dang, I wish they brought it back.
And I wish they brought back the original asteroids that actually moved and bumped off each other, and could squish your mining ship if you weren't paying attention.
The gold paintjob has had a funny history though. The original looked pretty bad, like the gold spray you get on metal furniture. That was why they did the golden as a way to compensate. Several shader changes later and now it looks awesome. Who knows what will happen in the future?
