Does anyone like the Eagle?!

why does everyone want to have their cake and eat it too??? if the eagle had better range, etc it would be too powerful.

The logical conclusion to that argument is that the Viper is vastly overpowered. It is currently better than the Eagle in every single regard except turn radius.:p

Also, how far a ship can jump is rather meaningless during a fight. Otherwise, a Lakon T6 would be the best combat ship in the universe because fully loaded it can do longer jumps than most ships can reach completely empty.:D

But seriously, upping the jump range of the Eagle works quite well, because that presents us with two dedicated fighters each with drawbacks and advantages:

Eagle: Long reach, very high agility, small guns.
Viper: Short reach, high agility, big guns.

The actual balancing problem I then expect to remain is maximum speed in normal flight. An Eagle doesn't have a chance against a Viper as long as the speed difference enables easy jousting against anything but a Cobra. The Eagle's high agility becomes meaningless when the Viper is quickly past the 2km mark, already preparing for another joust with its superior firepower.

(I already advocated normalizing all ships to have the same maximum speed, by the way.)

I like the Eagle, its more "original" for me because Frontier is the "real" Elite for me. In my eyes Elite I is totaly overrated. Of course great for its time...

Besides that i realy welcome new shiptypes, because ED is much more for me then feeling young again or drowning in nostalgica, its the 4th installment of an game series, 30 years after the first part. Of course i awaiting much, much more from it then the original, wich includes new shiptypes of course.

i love the thing, but i what i want to know will the other rumored variants look differently from the outside just as much on the inside?

They should not be trying to balance an eagle and a viper. The viper is more expensive and should be better as a combat ship. Just like the type 9 is a better trader than a hauler. I don't see people requesting that the type 9 jump range should be reduced because it is overpowered for instance.

As a combat oriented pilot I want better ships to aspire to and give me a reason to earn cash.

I'm fine with the Viper being the best dedicated fighter craft in terms of speed, weapons and manoeuvrability, however what I want is for each ship to have some sort of niche other than just being a step on the ladder until you can afford a Viper. Making the Eagle a long range fighter will give it that niche and a reason to buy and fly an Eagle instead of a Viper.

That would mean strict vertical progression, ship tiers in all but name. 25 playable ships planned would then dissolve into maybe 5 "endgame" ships. It'll be Freelancer all over - a great variety of stuff that is entirely crippled by the ship and equipment level system.

This problem is why I also suggested to invert the jump range vs ship size equation - the smaller the ship the longer the range, so that a Hauler can compete with a T9 - the former doing long trips with high value goods, the latter doing shorter bulk haulage runs.

It is one step up from the Sidewinder as far as combat goes.
Think of the Eagle as a challenge rather than as a ship to use everyday.

I like the Eagle! I've bought it several times. I love its sounds and its design! In the right hand, it can be quite agile. I've shot some Vipers down with my Eagle. There are only 3 things I don't like about it: quick overheating, small jump range, and paper-thin shields.

I've only flew in the Sidewinder and in the Eagle; I can only compair those two spacecraft.

I like the Eagle, it feels faster and more nimble then the Sidewinder. I also like the shape of the ship, it looks good to me; like a fighter. I like flying it.

But the jumprange is way too short IMO. If I put a hardpoint on the Eagle, the jumprange is decreased significantly; and don't even try to haul some cargo because you'll get nowwhere because of too heavy/insufficient fuel.

Good points, I like the idea of having to make choices based on things like jump range for freighters

I absolutely adored flying the Eagle, only traded up to a Viper (briefly) and then a Cobra because of the range.

The Eagle is a joy to fly with its agility and visibility, I spent many happy hours bounty hunting at nav beacons and flying anything else felt sluggish and constricting after that. The Cobra is cozy but I find the Viper a bit claustrophobic and unsophisticated.

Flying an Eagle is like nipping about in a little roadster like an MX5 or Elise, a Viper is more like a BMW M5 or AMG Merc or something; brutally fast in a straight line but heavier and less "fun".

My tuppence.

If so sell it to me, because I really don't! Not sure what it's more a case of. The fact it has awful jump range or that it is not an original ship. By that I mean it wasn't in the first Elite. Not that I'm against them adding new ships I just prefer the classic ones.

Frontier players will certainly consider it as much a classic as say the cobra mk3. those actually were the 2 starting ships in Elite 2.

The awful jump range is i think something that will be changed in the next build.

I guess its advantages lie in its manoeuvrability, 3 hardpoints, and low price(hence less to pay for the insurance).

If you can get a viper there's not much point in having one. But even though fragile it's not that bad in combat. A bunch of eagles can be a pain.

Couldn't agree more.
