Does anyone remember the good old Freelancer?

Hey there community!

Freelancer, the Microsoft game released in 2003...
Anyone remembers it?
Flying around the "Sirius" sector in various ships, fighting the aliens there known as Nomads, trading, fighting, pirating and all the other possible activities in a game from 16 years ago.

Well, there is this mod called Discovery Freelancer.

It's a full blown expansion, with flyable capital ships such as Battleships, destroyers, battlecruisers, massive transport vessels, many factions with their own ship designs built by a dedicated community, always trying to upgrade, update, and further enhance the world of Freelancer.
All this is an RP (roleplaying) community with very fleshed out characters by the community itself, with really deep character developments and player driven story telling and evolution in accordance to the RP done in their forums and in game.

I used to play this mod for several years, and after taking a break to focus on Elite, now I got bitten again and am back there from time to time.

Just so you get a little glimps of it:

Also, one of the members is making a series of videos on it with explanations on how things work, along with a lot of gameplay footage:

Give it a try, you might not regret it :D

I've have a website dedicated to it...

Oh that's awesome!

Discovery builds up on the original game and ads a whole new level of interaction.

Also, there are regular server events to push forth the storyline, changing stuff in game depending on what the outcome of the event is.

They added a lot of new systems as well.

Here just an overview of the current map:

Also, an interactive map if you want to see what's inside the systems.

Oh and of course, there's a wiki page:

To be honest, I am posting this here because lately the mod hasn't had a lot of new players due to lack of advertising.
There are people in the community playing it for more than 10years and still going, but since it's very niche and not much can be done to draw attention to a mod based on a 16years old game, well, it's not getting the attention it deserves.

It's an awesome mod but every game, no matter how good, is depending on its playerbase and drawing in new people is key to keep it afloat.

I remember Freelancer fondly, and never want to play it again. Too much squandered potential, too incoherent, and IMO people should rather make new games with modern tools instead of hacking around on ancient spaghetti with questionable IP legality.

I re-install it every few years. The only mod I really use is the one that lets you start at a higher level.

That game is also the reason I'm terrified of getting close to the metallic crystals in Elite Dangerous — they look like the minefields in Freelancer.

I loved Freelancer and played it a lot.
The mouse and keyboard controll was set up very nicely too.
Starlancer was a good game too.

And no predatory monetization or loot boxes back then.
I'm glad Fdev never went down that trail.

I remember. I still have it somewhere in a box. I played Freelancer while searching for a space game I would enjoy. I played Independence War I and II and Freespace around and at the same time I found Freelancer. I enjoyed all of them for a while until I found Evochron. The IWar and others are in that same box .... somewhere ??

I played it so much I ran right through the game in just a few weeks. The story was great, like a good science fiction book you just couldn't put down (and I couldn't put it down). Too bad they couldn't make a movie out of it (and we know how bad game movies turn out, but still...).
