Does GalNet mean anything?

The last few days I've been reading the GalNet news stories about the disappearance of the President and Spaceflight One in the Saga system. The news stories have been saying that there's supposed to be a big search and rescue attempt, so I thought I'd fly out there and see what's what, hoping to get involved in something connected with the story. I expected to see lots of system security, capital ships, players, maybe even missions to help with the search effort... And I found nothing. No players, no AI, no capital ships...

So is it all just filler? I love the game, but I sometimes feel I'm in a cardboard cut out universe where everything is the same and the news stories are fiction that doesn't reflect what's actually going on.

There was a CG running for a few days, exploring nearby systems for evidence. 2,000 commanders participated but nothing was found. Sometimes there are things players can do to interact with the story, sometimes not. Items that are 'pinned' at the top of Galnet are usually the ones with community goals for the playerbase. It was a community goal event (already finished). Anything with the little white icon in the news is a community event but check the dates since most don't last long.

Anything without the little white icon is filler, whilst by-en-large it does reflect what is actually happening its hard to see the changes unless you look for them. 1.3 Powerplay update will hopefully make the galaxy feel more alive but Im not sure how much...

Pretty sure there was a short term CG that was activated for this event. Think of GalNet as providing a canvas for story to occur, to setup CG's, and player motivation for the game.

Not everything in GalNet will lead to 'something to do', but gives those events that do occur, a solid background to exist within.

Been playing since beta, but I've never really bothered with GalNet or CG's before. Recently reset my save due to being bored (I was just wandering about trading and got very far away from other players) and am looking to get a bit more involved with things.
