Does heat signature really matter?

Ships like the DBX and DBS already run cool and engineering can make ship heat signature reduced even more. So how much does that all really matter? Does it make me "invisible" on scanners while in supercruise so that I won't be interdicted? What affect does it have in normal space? Thanks for your input in advance.

a really low heat signature works as silent running - you can read up here: "So how does signature work? Well, the smaller your signature, the closer a ship has to be before its sensors will detect you as a fuzzy contact (where the sensor marker flickers and moves around) and then as a resolved contact." https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=68069&p=1158586&viewfull=1#post1158586

my very cold running dbs on the silly ships expedition was only resolved 200m-300m for the other ships.

on the other extreme, your moduls (and ultimately your hull) take damage if they overheat. a lower heat level helps with not overheating - in combat, but also exploring, or cruising above high G surfaces.

as for how to manage your heat, see here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/286628-Research-Detailed-Heat-Mechanics

Silent running will hide you from sensors (used to be just players, but I hear it is working some against NPC's now) at ranges over 500m. Having a cold running ship allows you to stay in silent running longer before you overheat and start taking damage.

A cold running ship will also allow you to do things like an entire Imperial Hammer loadout and fire without taking heat damage, or only taking minimal.

Heat damage in small doses isn't too bad... heat damage for extended periods will start malfunctioning systems... malfunctioning systems are something I try to avoid.

it works to stop people seeing you on radar, however for god mode npcs you need to engage silent running or they know where you are some 8km away

In supercruise they can still see you, although you can use silent running to your advantage even vs npcs I created a vid where I ran from npcs without shields and using silent running as part of an exploration build, it does work surprisingly well, trick is to engage the moment you drop from sc, even in open I had players who couldn't see me or find me before I had jumped out the system

I'm currently running without shields as a result :) its almost a cloaking system

If my shields are down anyway, i engage silent running.. it looks like its working against NPC's. They stop hitting me, and sometimes they turn away. looks like they lost track of me.

Do you have to turn off modules to keep this working? I usuallu go about with cargo hatch off. Hardly ever use it.

It depends. Turning off modules will certainly help, but if you have a ship that's been engineered to generate less and less heat, you could (in theory) run near silent without having to turn anything off. If I were to do smuggling, that's probably how I'd go about it. Heat sinks can help quite a bit too.

Depends on your build in my DBx I can spend about 8 minutes in silent running just flying around without boosting, I can even fully charge the fsd for a high wake without overhearing, and this is with all systems powered

But even without silent running my heat signature is 7-12% depending on the system

It does work. When i fight enemies with turrets they can't track me when i go silent running... Missiles loose track to... Just remember it takes 3-5 sec before you are cold when u use it. Except if u use heat sink too.
