Does it matter to my headset what resolution I set in graphics options?

Does the resolution I set in graphics options only affect the window on my monitor or does it also have any effect on my Vive headset? If it doesn't affect my headset then it seems like it would be best to set it to the smallest size(640 x 480) on the desktop for best efficiency of processing power. Is that right?

It only affects the monitor window - all head sets like the Rift, Vive etc are all fixed resolution.

The resize from frame buffer to the monitor window is virtually free, no need to worry (smaller will use less memory, but the same size as the normal image render would be most efficient (1080x1200 for the Rift/Vive).

Can you explain why using same resolution as MHD for the mirror is most efficient? (Genuine question, no sarcasm there!)

If you use a different res, you have then upscale it etc to your HMDs res which uses up memory and processing power.

Thanks for the info.

Is is still best to use 1080x1200 if you increase pixel density (via ingame or debug tool)?

I think if you have a different pixel density then you would want to display at the different res in the monitor window too.

ie at 1.25 HMD Quality (or set to 1.25 in the Oculus Debug Tool etc for the Rift)
Normal res would be 1280x1200 per eye.... at 1.25x ED is rendering 1600x1500 per eye and then down-scaling to the native Rift resolution again. That's why the image looks smoother in the Rift/Vive... the original source image is better quality.

Scaling is such a minor operation nowadays for GPUs - there's hardly anything in it.
