Newcomer / Intro Does Odyssey include the base game - Elite Dangerous?

Greeting One & All - Ready to purchase the game but I am somewhat confused. On STEAM, to purchase Odyssey, they say you must first own the base game Elite Dangerous. But I read a couple reviews that say if you buy the Odyssey version, it comes with the base game included. Can someone clarify this please - Thanks

Ok so I buy the base game now $29 and when Odyssey is released it will an additional $39 - seems pricey

The base game is 7 years old, Horizons is 6 years old, both now included in the $29, Odyssey is the first payable DLC in 5 years, are you really complaining that it's a bit more expensive than the other two? Maybe they should charge the full new release price for Elite Dangeous and Elite Dangerous Horizons, then the Odyssey DLC will seem cheap in comparison?

LOL - I heard (YouTube review) that the Odyssey version included the base game - just trying to confirm if that was true. Thanks to Speedcuffs I now know/ Not complaining at all. I'll reserve that right for a later review of a 7 year old game I hope it live up to it's reputation.

Never trust a you tube review of something that is not yet available.

Whether or not Elite lives up to its reputation is unimportant it is whether you enjoy it once you have got the hang of the game and controls.

Agreed - Looking forward to learning the game. Did the training last-night with keyboard controls...yah...gotta get a decent joy stick! If you have a recommendation I would appreciate it. Charlie

The store page for Odyssey has this tagged on the bottom:

How much do you want to spend?
Thrustmaster T16000, Saitek X52, VKB and Virpil (various) all have their fans.
The first two are not free of bad experiences, though - mostly to do with their longevity.

If you aren't going for a full HOTAS then most sticks are pretty much equal in performance, it's reliability that counts. Most good joysticks use Hall Effect Sensors, cheaper joystick use Potentiometers. Most basic cheap gaming joysticks will be Potentiometer based. Thrustmaster and I think the others listed above use Hall Sensors so you should be ok with any of them. I always use the Thrustmaster T1600 and have had no issues with it so far, but that's only personal experience.

I would avoid the Logitech models like the Extreme 3D Pro as they use Potentiometers. They are fine for casual and occasional use, but if you become a serious Elite Dangerous, or indeed any other joystick game player they won't last long.

You can play ED perfectly fine with keyboard and mouse (well, not in VR maybe).
Just the default controls are not very good, you have to rebind to something useful (e.g. WASD+C/Space for thrusters, Q/E roll, pitch+yaw on the mouse, throttle settings to F1-F4, maybe R/F for manual throttle).
