Does Sysenthesis require Horizons?

Been playing for a month now and haven't seen a single synthesis material, not really sure how that all works...

Really short version.

Buy Hanger

Buy SVR (moon bubby)

Land on planet.

Deploy moon buggy

use wave scanner to find special rocks.

Zap rocks

lock onto fragments, deploy cargo scoop, collect fragments.

Use for synthesis.

If you don't have Horizons, you still have access tot he synthesis menu, so I think technically you can still do it - you just can't get down to the surface to access the stuff. I think other players can still give you stuff from the surface that they've fetched.

Personally, I think the whole thing is rather illogical. All of the synthesis elements situated on planet surfaces should be just as easy to find, if not easier to find, in asteroids. Iron, for example.

Personally, I think collecting surface rocks is a cool feature. But it's completely pointless. If we could combine it with mining or prospecting or drilling, it would be a different story. Now it's just there, filling absolutely no purpose except refueling the SRV to look for more pointless rocks.
Cool feature, but could've been a little more inspiring and interesting imo.

I think FDev has said that materials/synthesis will be coming to non-horizons eventually.

But I agree, right now, unless you're an explorer, it's of minimal use. Perhaps being able to resupply ammo during a fight is the only practical use when in the bubble. Fsd boost/srv refuel & repair are pretty much just tools for explorers.

A cmdr in a sidewinder recently made it to Beagle Point (65,279Ly from Sol), this would have been impossible without collecting a bucket load of materials for fsd boosts. Heck, this sidewinder toting lunatic didn't even have an srv, he was totally reliant on other cmdrs finding materials for him to pick up with his ships cargo scoop!

Nah, not useless ! Jumponium. That's the reason.

Plenty of people collect the ammo materials during quiet times, so they can camp during combat CG's. Who does not want infinite plasma? (he says trying to sound like a gun bunny)

Unfortunately yes but you will be able to collect them in soace soonTM so if you wait you may not feel the need to ourchase Horizons just because of synthesis.
I have horizons because of planets not just of materials. I actually don't use synthesis at all.

Synthesis is awesome. I wouldn't be able to kill Corvettes in my PvP Courier without it. It's saved me from needing the Fuel Rats multiple times since the FSD boost effectively double the fuel, as well as letting me jump through several systems quickly enough to help in an ongoing battle. The AFM reloads have saved me from having to return home from the Formedine Rift, after getting roasted by binary stars. The loot patch is probably going to make it much more awesome.

You kinds of didn't mention synthesizing 'jumponium', ammo, etc, etc. So it's not exactly pointless at all.

I use the Jump boost a fair bit, even in populated space, my FDL & Viper use the kinetic weapon boost and refill when I'm out in a res. SRV hull strengthening comes in handy when you want to drive like a nutcase through a mountain range. The Railgun/Plasma Acc & Missile boost & refill is also quite handy.

Agree with you on drilling/prospecting, fairly certain we'll be getting larger vehicles to handle those sort of tasks.

Well I dont explore anymore so 'jumponium' to Me is very much pointless. And I almost never need to craft ammo to restock. Which leaves me with the ability to refuel.
Like evey other aspect of the game, it takes time for it to evolve.
