Does the eagle have a fighting chance?

I was in Lave yesterday and though I'm not a PvP afficionado, I thought I'd have a few PvP skirmishes for fun. And I wanted to do that in an eagle, because I love that little ship and it is, after all, supposed to be a fighter. So I parked my Cobra (it's sentimental) at Lave station, bought an eagle, and pimped it with A class equipment and two fixed beams and a turret beam on top. I downgraded the shield to E2. That was unintentional, I don't know why it happened, but I was in a hurry. Anyway.

With my shiny new toy, I began looking for baddies CMDR. And man, those things come by packs of twelve, in Lave! At some point, I spotted CMDR ZA MAFIA (note to mods: no name and shame intended here) in his cannon boat (a full cannon viper, that is). The amount of wantedness under his name was close to 500.000, enough for me to pull him out of SC and see if he had anything to say for himself.

Now I wasn't really expecting to win. My shield was nearly useless, and he was supposed to be a tough pilot. But I got my behind handed to me quite fast. The eagle superior maneuvrability was of little help. All he had to do was to land maybe four to five successful hits. And he did. The turreted beam was no use and barely scratched his shield, and I'm pretty sure he didn't even use any SCB. I was forced to be defensive the whole time, until I was forced to get explosive. The same scenario occured three times (yes because I like to come back and take another beating).

Granted, my shield was not even worth mentionning, the all-beam setup was not the best idea, and maybe I lack a few perks in the skill department (I'm not that bad, however), but still, I wonder if an eagle actually has a fighting chance against everything bigger than it (and player controled). Has any of you been successful in using it in PvP versus something bigger?

Edit: I forgot to add: what's even worse is that my well equipped Cobra has an insurance cost of 400.000 something. The eagle I equipped was 120.000. The Cobra would have been a tougher nut to crack, and I may not have lost it, at least not three times in a row. Which makes the eagle even less of an interesting choice for PvP, IMHO.

The biggest strength of the Eagle is it's agility, make use of it and get rid of the beams and install some railguns or cannons.

Yes it's a great little ship if you use it enough. It doesn't have the bite of other ships meaning many will get away before you can disable them but against anything smaller than an asp it can if flown right, do very well

You should be realistic choosing your enemies. Eagle is a great ship but it is small and its hull is weak. Mostly you should deal with Sidewinders and small traders using it. Viper is a dedicated fighter one step above Eagle. Although it is not as manoeuvrable as Eagle it has much better shields, superior firepower as it has 2 medium and 2 small hardpoints, whereas Eagle has 3 small hard points. This pretty much negates Viper's manoeuvrability disadvantage.

Rail guns on an eagle just chew on your power supply, but this can be managed. The real problem is that class 1 railguns are not very powerful and the delay thingy can force you into uncomfortable positions to align a shot. They are nice enough on tougher ships that can take some heat, but the eagle just cannot afford that. It's made of thin glass. Cannons, why not. I stopped using them after Beta, didn't like the new speed of their projectiles. Maybe I'll have to learn using them again.

But has any of you won some fights versus seasonned viper or Cobra pilots, using it?

That is EXACTLY my thoughts.

Advanced maneuverability is only an advantage if you're up close and personal.

If you're half a kilometer away when you attack, then you have a massive arc to deal with when attempting to get behind your opponent.
