Does the story matter anymore?

I'll tell FDev what is truly ridiculous, today in 1.3 Beta 7; I was travelling right in the very centre of Senator Denton Patreus's home system of EOTIENSES, close to the atmosphere of his home world. Now bearing in mind this "Power" has the largest private military force outside of a superpower (or so FD's storyline provides), and he is a very militaristic man, not frightened of deploying and using force, who also goes to the ends of the galaxy to protect his own followers and real-estate: Is it even believable that I in an unarmedAsp; get attacked not once but twice, one after another?? First by an "Alliance Enforcer" whatever the hell that is, I legged it, only to be interdicted by a Federal Navy Viper...... so I ran and finally limped into the nearest station, still being chased by the viper...where the hell was the Patreus Security in all this?... and more to the point "what were enemy ships blatantly doing in the EOTIENSES system in the first place?" It shouldn't happen and if it did, they would be blasted to space dust before they got even a yard beyond the initial Nav Point... you should be safe in your own backyard, in the very pocket of your master and protector?????

Come on Dev team and WRITERS... surely the "story" means as much to you as it does to us avid "immersed" players!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is you who have not been following the story. If you had , you'd know that Patreus' legbreakers are never home because they are too busy working as his personal collection agency.

and...... he strips all defence back home.... even he ain't that thick! As for me not following the "story"; I've been involved since late 2013 so have seen the "story" degrade into chaos over nearly 16 months. Power Play has accelerated this degrading to the point that I think recovery is unlikely. If this very special games' backstory means little, i.e you are just happy with a jumbled PEW PEW game then so be it!

I think you are right, no specific story is going to "survive contact with the enemy". Themes that can be directed by inserting a small event at strategic points in the flow of things would work very well IMO.

And I do have experience in this, having done live storytelling for many years. Responding to the audience, whilst keeping the story heading towards the conclusion, is a skill you have to learn very quickly :)

This is the entire problem with the game. Very little in the written galnet story actually reflects in the real world of the game. The only thing "in-game" that changes are the numbers, progress bars, words and names on various menus. Then eventually at some point if we are lucky the NPC's get a name change too. But all else remains the same.

I think what the problem actually is, is the lack of back lore from the previous games and proper lore for each of the factions to really tie everything together, but there's only so much you can do when two of the three powers operate in total complete secrecy. (EDIT: THE FACTIONS ARE NOT AT WAR OFFICIALLY, EVERYTHING THEY HAVE DONE, WERE SMALL SKIRMISHES, OR CAMPAIGNS TO TAKE SYSTEMS FROM EACHOTHER. BRUSH WARS IF YOU WILL)
But I mean I will clear this up, as best to my abilities. It's safe to say from politics and knowing politicians that it's always smart to hide your pieces and to deny everything. Which is why everything is so dependent on small covert actions dealt mainly by Senators behind the emperor's back or the Federation's "Shadow Navy". However I do believe that in a time of peace or what ever there is of, there would be free movement of naval forces, (within reason) because you need to take such and such routes sometimes to get to a certain place. Doesn't mean they won't get blown up on the spot, however I'm waiting for proper blockades in a time of war to happen, or declared embargo's which such and such case would happen the destruction of all naval vessels in the area, halting of traders, and scanning of ships.

Circa 2300AD. She was notorious for speaking out against the harsh Federal administration which oppressed society. Such was her disenchantment that she gathered her family together, along with many supporters, and left the Federation. Marlin led them to a distant star system called Achenar, many light years from Sol, in order to start a new colony that would follow more peaceful ways. The colony started off extremely well, and an administrative council was formed with Marlin at the head, in order to fairly distribute power throughout the colony. As the colony expanded, so did the council, with a determination that any and every situation was dealt with via peaceful methods and dialogue. This arrangement worked very well indeed and the colony continued to prosper.
Alas, a few years later Marlin Duval was killed in a shuttle accident, in which her partner and children also perished. The accident was shrouded in controversy and happened under very suspicious circumstances.

Henson Duval, brother of Marlin Duval, took over the existing colony's administration almost immediately after his sister's death. Henson's first act was to disband the council and assume sole responsibility for the leadership of the Achenar colony. Henson then began to fervently denounce Marlin's vision for peace, and turn the focus and motivation of the colony away from its peaceful roots. Such was his passion and power of persuasion that he succeeded in converting the capricious colonists to his doctrines in a remarkably short period of time. During this period many requests were made, to Achenar from the Federation, for the colony to join them, all of which were flatly refused. Henson's vision of an Empire was finally realised when he announced that the leadership of the colony, and any affiliated systems, would be passed down from father to son. With that mandate the Empire was born, circa 2314AD.
Some years later, Henson ordered the sterilisation of Achenar 6d, in order to make it the homeworld of the Empire, which resulted in the extinction of a sentient race indigenous to that planet. This, and Henson's perpetual attempts to convert nearby systems to membership of his fledgling Empire, enraged the Federation into sending a massive battle fleet to Achenar in order to end this new regime. The Federation surprisingly suffered a stinging defeat at the hands of the Empire.
With this victory, worlds that had previously been approached by Henson Duval, and initially refused his offers, now willingly gave their allegiance, abandoning the Federation in favour of the new, and mighty, Empire. As a result the Empire began to expand and grow, exponentially.

The Independent Alliance of Systems arose out of a need for co-operation. Centuries of warfare and both Imperial and Federal meddling in a great many otherwise peaceful independent systems caused various small alliances to form and then get broken up over the centuries. The Alliance formed from a number of culturally different systems with a unified goal – to provide a stronger voice in the galaxy for its member systems and ultimately to defend them against unwelcome attention from the big powers. The Independent Alliance is culturally very varied and its leadership, which involves a presidency which moves annually between member systems, has been described as ‘challenging’. Seeking agreement between the member systems is generally a tortuous process, usually ending up with a great deal of compromise. Militarily, co-operation has been more successful. Each member system contributes a portion of its navy to the Alliance Defence Force – the total contribution being proportional to the system's gross domestic product (GDP). It is led by the Council of Admirals, a six-strong body made up of one leader from each of the largest member navies. The council can act swiftly without government approval, which has proved very effective, and over the years there has been little disagreement between the admirals. Contributed vessels generally bear the decals of their own navy, but have an additional Alliance Defence Force decal applied while they are with the group – so the culture of identity and independence (and rivalries) applies here too.

Nice summation, shame the actuality "on the ground" does not lend itself to a coherent on-going narrative, The "hostility system" just makes non-confrontational actions difficult at best and impossible at worst. Elite has evolved from a "Space Trading" game into a "Space Combat" game with a good space flight/galaxy backdrop. We will just have to accept the inevitable incongruous events like those that I described in my OP. :( Have Rep+1 :D

I do think however they will pit the two factions at war, which is when the Thargoids will come into play. Thats how I see it playing out.

I was actually quite tempted to go to Sol to see if there were any increase in traffic arriving at Mars for the Fed election.
Besides not having the actual (RL) time to invest in this, I kinda doubted there were anything to see...
