Does this game need more players, or more players per area instance?

How do we actually tell if players are real? Those AI with 1st & 2nd full names are so obviously not real players.
If I find a real player can I communicate in Comms by targeting them?

On your radar:
Solid Block NPC
Solid Triangle NPC with hardpoints out

Open block/Open Triangle Real Player

The only way to communicate with an unfriended player is to target them.

If you want to see players then head to the "popular" area's - Sol, Lave, Eranin and the starter areas. You can check the traffic reports to see how many ships have been about, Lave for example has 1000's, go a couple of hundred LY away and you will only see 1-2 !!

Yes that is correct, 32 players is the instance cap.

I have the same feeling as the OP, I don't see many players around anymore even though I am going to reasonably common trade systems that have rare commodities. For the time being I think players will have to create their own areas of interest like the conflict in lugh, I would imagine the developers are aware of the sparse feeling but it will take some time for them to solve.

The problem as I see it is a tricky one, because you need to create some kind of honeypots to draw the players together and to create a risk vs reward type scenario to make people feel engaged and that there is something to gain / lose by their involvement. But also you don't want players who are doing mining / trading to feel like they are just playing the role of fodder for the combat pilots. That's why I think there needs to be some more kinds of progression in the game, so players can work towards something. e.g. Eve has capital ships, territories, stations and some other stuff. I dont know what the answer is, but really from trading / mining all you can really do is save up to buy a bigger ship. And As others have already mentioned its possible to just drop into SOLO to avoid the risk of being ganked.

I would like to see more scenarios that bring players to work together, and have a sense of high risk / high reward. e.g. something like in the galaxy news report that a new rare mineral belt has been discovered in a system, and that X other system is in dire need of this resource because they need it to complete their terraforming project. This creates an area for miners to go, and a trade route which would both be very rewarding for the players who choose to take up the task. But at the same time, it will attract the pirates... and the bounty hunters. Make it online only so that players have to accept the risk to get the reward. Want to go mining for this valuable resource? Better bring your wingman to cover your butt. Want to go gank these miners / traders? You can bet there will be plenty of bounty hunters sitting in wait.

I really enjoy the game so far, the flight feels really nice and I like all the UI. But so far all I've been doing is trading because I don't really know where to go other than lugh to find other players, and trading seems to be the fastest ways to get credits to buy the gear you want.

So... ok..

There are the "starting areas". A lot of people have ended up starting in LHS 3447. A LOT. There are popular places such as Lave, Sol, Tau Ceti, and a few other places I can't remember right now.
Yeah I started off in LHS 3447 too, currently about 25 LY out from there slowly working my way towards Sol. Visited about a dozen systems from LHS 3447 and every system so far has been swarming with other CMDRS.

To be honnest, I think it needs both. And all of those "400 billions star systems so it doesn't matter" responses are pure non-sense. Unless you're an explorer, you wont go in uncharted territory at all, as you have no reason to.

as i said before. WHY should i play in open as a trader or miner or explorer. there is no advantage. only disadvantage. except from the fact that it is more thrilling. but a lot of people dont like pvp. so there is no reason to go to open play.

i play with my community. about 15 players in closed group and we are doing trading without people who jsut want to kill people.
and if frontier isnt adding something i think more and more people will do that too

One very good idea along storylines is to have you hired to fight a System war of Feds vs Empire by use of a loaned Viper. If you want to play exciting combat with mixed AI and players in an unlimited system then this surely be a winner! The wars could spring up in a new mixed system once won.

P2P is tricky to balance, too loose matchmaking and you get rubberbanding players, lag etc, too tight and there's no one to see. Given that LHS 3447, Eravate, etc shows loads of players for me but is still pretty good connection wise, I'd say the balance is right. I'm in the UK so that definitely helps, more remote less populous geographical areas may see differing results.

There isn't much graphics in space and fps is set at 60. In just the one system you could be transfered to a dedicated warzone server. Even bf4 can handle 64 players but Planetside2 has 1000s!

I've been playing solo mode mostly, decided to log in and play on open, just the system I was in there were nine commander trying to dock at the same outpost..lol. I jumped around to a few systems and everyone I was seeing multiple cmdrs. I docked at Littlewood terminal (v1688 aquile I believe). There were some strange things happening, like a lakon type 9 just floating in the middle of a station, an eagle was constantly ramming into that, there was another small ship crashing into a large landing pad. I've never had the game performance suffer like it was tonight.
