So I'm flying around in the Outer Reaches, and I'm watching Netflix while checking in on my carrier to restart the jump clock every 23 minutes. I'm on a 50,000 LY cruise right now that I'd LIKE to take longer, but don't have time for. (Passengers have places to be.) So realistically, this is going to take around 2 days, even with a full tritium hold (which I have). This gives me plenty of time to read a book, paint my nails, play Contro--
Wait, I can't do that last one, because I'm using my console to play Elite. Also, flipping back and forth between games every 25 minutes (which I've done) gives me that weird I-jumped-3-hours-before-my-carrier-left glitch on my Series X (Quick Resume plays havoc with the game timer). Thankfully, the glitch isn't terrible, once I got used to showing up in deep space in a T9 with an 11 LY range and no carrier... for another 4 minutes.
But I'm not here to talk about the glitch. I'm here to talk about immersion.
I understand that while I'm flying to Sag A* or wherever in my Conda, I basically can't leave my seat. That would break immersion. However, on a carrier with a rec room that I'm SURE has at least 2-3 consoles hooked up to it, I should be able to play something in that 23 minutes.
So what about a copilot? Not an AI one, but an actual, honest to Dog (RIP, Half-Life 3) copilot who could take over for me for stretches. Someone who I could assign the helm to for a limited time, while still retaining ownership of everything else? LIKE I COULD HAVE FOR MY ALT?
Because this ship has crew, right? Why can't I hire my squadmate, who's actually on board traveling with me, to handle the recharting duty every ~500 LY or so? So that I can find something else to occupy my time? Since the billboard ads haven't changed since FCs launched, and I'm too tired right now to fly alongside and map an additional 100 systems as we fly through.
Seriously, human-assignable copilots to nav the carrier. THAT would actually be the opposite of not-immersive, as well as the opposite of being forced to watch the smoke in my hangar.
Either that, or let me have a seat on my damn bridge so I can see the light show every 23 minutes. Personally. I like the copilot idea, although adding both would be wicked smaht.
