Proposal Discussion Dogfight sim

Hi all
Have been playing with some friends in premium beta (hard atm i know)

One thing we have discussed and would love to see in game is a mode for skirmishes.
While we can do this in the normal game now as is I really do not want to destroy the ship of a friend or have a friend destroy mine and incur the costs of insurance etc just to test our skills against each other.

So the proposal is for an in game sim for skirmish and dogfights. these could be for docked pilots only possibly only in the same spaceport.

In this mode pilots could fight and test load-outs against players in safety.
No rewards nor incentive just the ability to refine skills in a training/sim mode
I know some have asked for docking aids/training etc this could also fit in here also the single player training missions could be part of this interface as well.
Cheers
Mallick

And once again this raises it's head!

Hi Gwidyon

If you are referring to the pvp discussion then I guess you could look at it that way though I do not see this as a competitive mode more of a training mode.

no leader boards, no stats, no rewards etc

I would like to have a go against the ppl I play with cooperatively without destroying them.

Think of it as in station entertainment for pilots

I don't think FD want this sort of function in game, based on past communications. I personally don't want it either, but not for obvious reasons.

In every mmorpg I've played that did not have official pvp arena combat, a sort of underground community fight club culture evolved. A certain set of areas grew to be known as the "pvp spots". As the community made the rules, each engagement could be unique, and reputations are built in real ways other that score cards.

I guarantee this kind of thing will evolve in ED, it's inevitable. And it really is far more fun that strict regimented score/leader board pvp. The whole underground element adds a great feel, and really suits the ED ethos I think.

The last thing I want is a pvp mode
I am completely against the idea of arenas etc

This is a way to interact with friends without incurring fugitive status or the cost of replacing ships in a small isolated setting

Could be a sales tool for shipyards selling new models

What I was hoping for starting this thread was ideas people could throw at the problem that would allow some (risk free) interaction without inciting a pvp style mode

I have no qualms about going out in the main game and taking on friends etc but the cost inhibits this and it would not be fun to be throwing hard earned credits out the window for a quick bit of combat.

I could take the path of pirate or bounty hunter and engage players no problem, they will probably all be people i have never met that i have no interest in regardless of outcome

Friends could definitely team up for these activities fine no problem but at some point we are going to have a go at each other even if its just to see how one does certain maneuvers etc

If the result of this is that there is no solution then that's fine we will find an empty spot in space and have at it and eat the costs.

I have no interest in a fight club or underground pvp whatsoever and would avoid it.

I think it would be fun, but make it glowy retro wireframe and more like the original elite game. Kind of like a retro coin op machine you can play at the space station.

Underground fight club would be nice. Winner takes all and you can bet on the fighters. Everything organized by the players, would be risky if the bookie decided to run with the bet money though, but that's the point of underground betting :)

then for the ultimate no lose friend vs friend combat use one of your save slots and go head to head in a starter ship each - you wont lose anything that way ;)

This is true and if that's what we have then fair enough.
Though this means only using the base sidewinder and pulse laser. While this would be fine as a minimum it would be nice to be able to run current ships and load-outs.

Once the full game is implemented with crime and punishment etc this will basically make casual combat outside of conflict zones (and the above mentioned starter) very risky.

This wireframe retro look was also proposed elsewhere as a HUD overlay for a kind of night vision for when you are in the shadows. Clearly there is a lot of nostalgia and love for the original game.
Maybe the wireframe view could be night vision on the HUD and for the arcade in game it could be the solid polygon version that came out slightly later on the Atari and Acorn?

A very good point, reminded me of pre-arena WoW. Good times, Good post!

I like CMR Mallick's idea. I think it would be fun to have some type of a mode where friends can practice dog-fighting. If there is nothing to gain or loose, then why would it be a problem?

The wire-frame homage mode is interesting, however I think that has nothing to do with what CMR Mallick is suggesting here.

I like the idea of an in-game simulator too, and it makes sense. We've all seen the threads on here of people who have bought the game and are getting frustrated by being blown up and losing everything (or at least, a lot) because they're not yet good enough to win fights, haven't grasped the controls yet, etc... Those people who have bought been through the alpha and beta stages will have a huge advantage over the new players when the game is released, and many of those new players will probably get pretty frustrated!

If the new players (including me) have somewhere they can go to practice their dogfighting skills with no gain in reputation, money, etc... (and perhaps it even *costs* to use the simulator?), they are less likely to get annoyed with the game.

After all, let's face it, how many pilots of the future would be thrown into a spaceship with no training at all?
