Newcomer / Intro Doing the Neutron Dance

I suppose it's a noob question, so I'll put it here. Also, my fellow old hands will point and laugh if I post it in the mosh pit ;)

When hopping Neutron Stars, just how far down is it safe to let your FSD deteriorate before you absolutely have to use your AFMU to get it back up to snuff?

It's not that I mind a mis-jump, but the thought of the FSD malfing while in a Neutron Cone gives me nightmares.

90%? 80%? Lower?

Been awhile since I've used the highway but from memory you'll start to have FSD malfunctions at 80% I think.

You'll not have problems in the Neutron cone from that though you'll just fail to jump and have to start the count again

So if I understand you correctly, an FSD failure won't drop you from SC, it will just keep you from entering SC/Jump?

If so, fantastic. I'm just trying to limit the times I have to manually leave SC, repair, turn modules on and off and such. Right now, I'm getting paranoid as soon as the FSD drops to 95% :)

I believe so but it's been awhile ;) I used to drop at 80% and repair then, so 20 neutron jumps between repairs should be malfunction free.

Perhaps you should perform an extensive test, see just how far you can push it and how frequently the malfunctions come once you get below 80% :) But obviously don't do it when you have something to lose like explo data or an expensive ship. I'd be interested to know if you could limp along at 50% for instance :)

That sounds like a plan. I might do it if I decide to go back the Bubble without using the Cylon Taxi. My only fear is losing SC in the cone, obviously, since that's an instant death sentence. Having my SC/HJ go "bzzzt" while charging is no concern at all.

You can, but it's kind of like driving with a flat tyre: it's a lot slower, and a lot less comfortable.

You can cross the galaxy on a 1% FSD, if you particularly want to. Your "jump" button might wear out from continually mashing it, though.

Does it not go to 0% after 1%? There you go @MishaTX, something else to test out for us :)

I don't think attempting a neutron jump with a 1% FSD is cause for insta-boom; I think we'd have heard about that by now. So I don't think it ever drops you below 1%.

I don't know what the probability is actually successfully jumping when you press "J" (or whatever you've set it to), with an engine that badly damaged, but I imagine it would be pretty low. As I said, lots of J-button-mashing until the FSD eventually works.

Yeah.. I wasn't suggesting it goes boom, just that it doesn't work any more. Like when modules get shot out by other players or NPCs and you have to reboot your ship's system to get the module to 1%
