Ships dolphin its my favorite exploration ship .. I'm mad?

Don't know if its just me, but after checking the usual DBX, aspx, Phantom and anacondam for one reason or another, none of them convinced me to drop my belowed dolphin.
Doesn't have the best jump range, but still quite decent, its a small sized ship ( very agile and lands everywhere ) and with tons of optional modules available and with exacly the sized i deeded.

Its just a joy to fly. Every time I look on the aspx and dbx i just can't stand the fact that after putting the guardian booster and fuel scoop, you can't put a dual SRV module ( size 4), the anaconda looks to be the best all rounded, but didn't survived 15 minutes in my hands .... too big, and it felt like a flyng brick.. went back selling it after few minutes. Big sized ship are just too sluggish for me, and even tried to land it in rocky planets....

The phantom intrigues me, its a medium ship ( hence much better thatn the anaconda) on paper looks better compared with the dolphin but not by a great margin. Same optional slots number, 2-3ly better jump range on equivalent engineering level. Good, but not mind-blowing, and still a small ship is easier to land around.

My black@yellow dolphin (my setup: ASTROCAB-01 ) have still room for lot of engineerings to do, but already gives me 57ly jump range with all the modules i wanted for my deep space exploration.
I already made few long range trips with it, and currenty i'm at 7k LY from bubble and my trip is just started .. i just can't see how other ships could be that much better.

I'm missing something? If the dolphin is indeed a good exploration ship, why i never see it mentioned?

Not only is the Dolphin one of the best exploration ships, it's also one of the best pirate ships. Rejoice that you like a niche ship ignored by most of the player base, as there's nothing more boring than driving the same minivan every other soccer mom in town is driving. Though I must admit, the Krait Phantom is one fine minivan ;)

You're not mad, the dolphin is a great explorer. Even better now that it runs so cool - I might try putting an ovecharged powerplant on mine for a bit more range.

You've got a repair limpet controller but nowhere to store them. Maybe lose one of the AFMs for a rack? You'll hardly use them except for neutron boost repair, and given that carriers are everywhere already, help is never far away.

hm .. you are right.. actually what i have right now its a docking computer  ( forgot to remove it) , but want to replace it with something else as soon as i come back to the bubble. The idea behind the dual AFM its that one can repair the other, so i'm not much keen to ditch one. Have to think about what to put into that slot.

EDIT: to clarify .. i like the idea of dual SRV and dual AFM. The supecruise assist its there just for the 0 throttle after the jump... probably would be better remove also supecruise assist to add that cargo module, but i hate that i have to manually slow it down after every jump .....

People like to repair one afmu with a second one, but, if your one afmu is at 0% it's very likely that your power plant is aswell ;)
Also a reboot put it back to 1% which makes it 100% functional

The dolphin is a nice ship, but I feel constrained in a small ship.
Luckily the Orca is as sleek and still very good maneuverable for a big ship ;)

Oh, and btw. You can start the jump and after the countdown press the "0 throttle" key and you will stop after the jump :)

I know.. i guess have to get used to 0 throttle. As soon as i come back to the bubble i'll change my setup.

Mind a question? Why you feel constrained in a small ship? Talking exploration exclusively. I understand when it come to pvp/pve/mining .. but for exploration?
You need no guns and the only thing that might hit your shield its a bad landing ..

I still haven't tried neutron jumps, so i'm not sure if the big ships are more "durable" or the damage taken its the same. Whats the reason to opt for a "bigger one" ?

the only thing I could think off its that bigger ships means less agility and more difficulty finding a suitable landing spot ( no doubt you will always find a landable place, but its much easier on a small one). As long as the dolphin have the same number of optionals, i could not find any reason to get the orca. Well.. have a 1LY base jump increase ( which i guess can become 2-3 ), but there anything else?

Personally I feel constrained in bigger ships - they have more momentum so it's more likely that you'll slam into a planet. And when you do less likely that it will survive it, all other things being equal.

There is no serious answer to this, more some kind of RP. It just doesn't "feel" right for me to make long journeys in this little one person scooters ;)
Maybe 'constrained' is the wrong word. It's what I feel in a small cockpit
I am exploring with my family, staff, a chef and some cats, so to say :)

From a game play perspective you are perfectly fine to use a small one, no downsides. And I didn't noticed a big difference while NS boosting...

I'd drop the docking controller, move the repair controller into the now open class 1 and place a 4 tonnes rack into the class 2. Limpets are synthesized 4 at a time so the fit is perfect.

The only thing I found the docking controller good for is giving us funny stories if it smashing some poor commander's ship into the station wall until it explodes.
