Dolphin only in DLC packages?

Greetings Commanders, as the title states, is the new Dolphin ship available only in the DLC versions of Elite Dangerous?

I just came back to ED from the XB1 version, and I have the regular game, not Horizons or The Commanders DLC packs (yet), is the Dolphin available for me to buy or do I need one of the DLC's? Thank you for reading.

The Dolphin is only available for purchase if you are running Horizons. (If you own Horizons access, but are on a 32-bit machine, you're out of luck.)

Horizons is the entire 2.x branch, of which The Commanders is a part. By buying Horizons you're also getting The Commanders.

You should still keep it, as a) you still own Horizons on that account, and b) you bought one, which would be impossible if you didn't already own Horizons.

The Commanders is nothing else but few ship color kits. It is a incentive to buy since for same price of ED+Horizons you can buy the bundle and you get both + some ship colors (Commanders pack). It doesnt bring any new playable content to the game.

And yeah, when I go into ED standalone, there is no Dolphin. So I guess Horizons are required.

I know you can't buy it, but what if you're already in it? Or can you still switch into it, if you already own one?

I dont own it on the Horizons instance. I can test it out for you and see what happens but I doubt it will let me keep it after I switch from Horizons. Gimme 10min.

EDIT: It returned me to ASPX in ED standalone. It was a last ship I was in before logging out in ED. Was in Dolphin when logging out of Horizons.

Curious... were the ships stored at the same station? I wonder what happens if one tries that, while their previously used ship is elsewhere. Instant travel?

Thank you so much for testing it!! I'm on an older gaming laptop, so the current drivers won't run Horizons and I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle of trying to update them. Guess I'll give it a go.

If you don't require the Luxury cabins, the Type 6 is every bit as good as a dolphin for passenger missions. Type 7 also as good as a beluga (again if you don't need luxury cabins). Much cheaper too.

Luxury PAX missions are pretty rare, so I'd say its not worth upgrading kit just for that, though there is an awful lot more to Horizons than just a ship

I try to support game by buying ship paint jobs etc as well.

Seriously though Horizons has a lot going for it. And they've not finished changing it yet, there is more to come.
