Don´t be cheap, hire an orchestra

FD, just get yourself on an airplane to Eastern Europe and get it recorded by professional musicians. Lots of studios are doing that on a budget.
50K at most.
Add it as a retroactive stretch goal, should have been hit about half a year ago.

Who's to say that's not the plan already...they don't need "strech goals" for that. Actually, they don't even need to get on a plane for that since several orchestras can do recording sessions like this over the internet anyway.

the ability to add your own mp3 tracks is a must, here are some of my ideas:

entering an anarchy system: Highway to hell by ACDC

running away from a fight: Bat out of hell by Meatloaf

entering hyperspace: Jump by Van Halen

engaging in a little piracy: Stand & Deliver by Adam & the Ants

I love this idea. Could be implemented as simple as a text file for each relevant occasion, where you can list audio files (by name or path) from which the game selects at random.

<- would totally use the music from Firefly and Bastion.

I always remember the orchestral music playing in total annihilation (I think it was that game) and it really did give the game an epic feel. You cannot beat the real thing ! coke....the real thing !

it could be done even easier than that, if you take a look at my later post in this thread i suggest a method of doing it:

all that needs to be done is to put the atmospheric music in clearly marked folders, one for combat, another for hyperspace transit etc.

that way when you want to add your own tracks to the mix all you have to do is drop them in the appropriate folder and let the game do the rest - simples
