Lave Radio - a podcast about Elite Dangerous.

I understand Zac and Ed (community management team) are on tonight.

Its a great podcast were you learn all about Elite and its worth a listen just to hear the goofy commercials they make that you would hear in your ship if it had a radio.

I tried to listen to Lave Radio a few times, but they we so condescending towards the X1 and console gamers that I stopped. Having stopped, I will no doubt miss out on them calling the HOTAS joystick the "hot ass" several times each episode. Since I do not miss the fifth grade, I do not expect I will miss Lave Radio.

Ive played PC and Consoles for so many years I just blow off any comments like that, so it dont bother me. Life is to short to get mad about someone preference on what they game on. I play on what im in the mood for sometimes I want to sit back in the lazyboy drink beer and game, other times I want to fire up the rig and break out the gear and go all out they both have their ups and downs. As far as Im concerned when it comes to a game this great play it on whatever you can whenever you can. One thing I like about the xbone version is its easy to haul around on the road just a couple of wires and it packs right up. Now my PC isnt going on the road so easy lol.

I'm all for playing games how you want to play them. I apologize if my post gave a different impression. I think it would be an improvement if the Lave Radio folks had the same approach.

Also, I did not mean to give the impression that I was mad about someone's preference on what they game on, as that is not the case.

Many folks are competitive, and want to feel important. Some people feel good about posting the specs of their PC in their forum signature, so that everyone knows what sort of rig they have. Some folks feel important by belittling other people, for whatever reason they can find. I don't know if the Lave Radio crew were doing that on purpose (or why they would,) but that is certainly what I heard when I listened. Once again, I am not mad, I just stopped listening.

One of the Lave Radio commentators said he was an actor, but there was not any evidence that I could discern in the broadcast that any of the presenters had any live radio, TV, or theater experience. The episodes I listened to were rambling, unfocused, and almost entirely devoid of pertinent information. That may be because at this stage, there is not enough information to fill an hour podcast, but obviously "riffing" to try to fill an hour doesn't necessarily make for good radio. Working live is difficult, and perhaps the podcast can be improved by adding a moderator who knows what they're doing in a live broadcast situation. Yes, it's a podcast, so many people listen to it later, but it is recorded live.

If they really do want to be representative and inclusive of the entire Elite:Dangerous community, it may be appropriate for them to tone down their comments making fun of consoles and console gamers. Hell, if I were Frontier (and I have no idea what sort of relationship Lave Radio has with Frontier, other than they interview some Frontier employees once in a while,) I would insist that they do so. It was a disappointment to listen to them condescend to the X1 and console gamers, as I went looking for an E:D podcast (and found Lave) because I was excited about E:D coming to the console. I would think Frontier would not want one of the most prominent E:D voices to leave gamers the impression with which I was left.

I am thrilled that we have Elite:Dangerous on the X-1 because, as a gamer, that's where I'd rather play it. I game extensively on my PC as well, and I don't really understand the people who look down on one way to game or the other. Perhaps the condescending tone Lave Radio takes regarding consoles is on purpose; maybe they're catering to the "PC master race" audience. That would be too bad, because while I think I could put up with an amateur radio show if it talked about something I love, I won't spend my time listening to one as dismissive and juvenile when it comes to the X1, and X1 owners, as Lave radio is.

Well, I'm, sorry you feel that way. As Lave Radio's occasional X-box player, it not my intention to put down X-box players who play Elite. Most of my grumbles come from my inability to use the controller. Most of the worry from the PC players comes from watching how some x-box players act on other multiplayer games such as Halo and Call of Duty and there is an assumption that the majority of x-box players would prefer to start player killing as soon as they could. Thankfully the inclusion of CQC and the fact the instances are not to be shared, has put a lot of minds at rest. Some of the insecurity has stemmed from the fact that the PC was going to be (and at the moment still is) the main development platform, as promised in the original kickstarter. However, when along comes new content coming out on the x-box first, then that opens old wounds about the offline mode being cancelled and other things which were promised. Presently, there are more players using the PC/Mac version but for most of the last podcast I was flying round Lave on the X-Box 1 saying hi to people when I could. If we were so dismissive of the X-Box One as you claim; that wouldn't be happening.

As far as your comments about the presentation, we're not going to change the way we do things. It's supposed to be a fun thing that we do because we want to and we give up a lot of spare time to pull it together, so there will be 'riffing' and light banter (And you think that the HOTAS joke is bad, go listen to Dockers) but there are the big questions we have tackled (such as the offline mode, that was a doozy) in a more serious manner when the situation dictates . You seem to want a far more serious tone and that will kill off what Lave Radio is. Yes, We have people on from frontier from time to time but we're not Frontier's podcast. We want to have the option to criticizes Frontier when we feel that something has gone wrong . Personally, I think there's a little bit of a dry spell for news but as things approach gamescom, that will pick up and soon(tm) we'll be back to discussing the new feature more in depth.

I feel that the tone towards the X-box is the show is no worse than that your 'PC Master Race" Jibe and if you want to hear what our 'Actor' has been able to do, go listen to the Official Elite Audiobooks over at Fantastic Books. Once you can come up with things better than that, I'll hand over the x-box controller to you and you can do it.

its always disappointing to read comments that are negative toward a project that I love and work on with passion and a lot of effort.
We do our best and we love suggestions of what could be included on the show, and where possible and correct to do so, we include what we can.

All feedback is welcomed, but in this case, I strongly disagree with many of your comments.

Thanks for the feedback.

If you are only an occasional Xbox player, then do you think you are the best qualified person to speak about Elite: Dangerous on the Xbox?

Also, if your podcast has a perceived bias against console players, do you give any credence to the idea that how "some Xbox players act" might not be representative of all Xbox owners, especially those drawn to Elite: Dangerous in the first place? I think everyone here is aware that "flame wars" and vitriol and toxicity on PC gaming forums and in PC multiplayer can be every bit as disheartening as the console multiplayer sphere is perceived to be. Full disclosure, I don't play CoD, so I'm talking though my hat a bit here.

Why should your inability to use the controller (and the man I head on Lave radio discussing the Xbox controller did a darn sight more than "grumble,"), elicit such vitriol towards the controller and console gamers, rather than an earnest, and perhaps more than "occasional," effort to learn to use it? As a PC and a console gamer, I find the controller to be brilliantly adapted by Frontier but, of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I am sure that other people make equally bad jokes, and repeat them as often, as the HOTAS joke on Lave Radio. I admit, I have no idea how the people who manufacture the HOTAS peripherals, and who make a living doing so, feel about their products being referred to that way. Clearly, this is merely my opinion, but I certainly will not compound my error by listening to other people making bad jokes, nor do other bad jokes make the ones I don't care for any more tolerable. Also, I am obviously not judging the entire podcast on one joke.

The only "tone" I mentioned was one of inclusion, rather than condescension, towards console gamers. I would certainly enjoy a podcast that was informative, regardless of the tone. Of course you're not going to change what you do, why would you? If it's working for you, why would you change it? Do you feel that you are immune to criticism for the reasons you mentioned? If so, I'd be grateful if you explained.

As for the "PC Master Race Jibe" (capitalization is yours, not mine) I did not coin that term, and it is more often, in my experience, used by PC users when they are talking to, or about, console gamers. If you feel the condescending tone towards the X1 and console gamers evident in your podcast is "no worse" than me using the term "PC master race" to tangentially describe a possible reason for your apparent disdain for consoles and console gamers, then I fear that the gulf of understanding here is even greater than I'd imagined.

As for your actor, I hope he has a rewarding career. Personally, I don't have any desire to see what he's been up to, but I hope he's doing well. I will not rise to your confrontational and surprising "if you can do better than that" challenge on a public forum, but, if you wish, we can discuss it further in PM. I would, however, be willing to make a side bet (Case of beer? Bottle of Scotch?) that my resume stacks up favorably.

I love Elite: Dangerous, and it is a great day for X1 owners to have a preview program, a game as deep and engaging as this one, and the potential for mods and other great features of PC gaming appearing down the line. Console gamers have not loved it as long as PC backers, of course, and that may be some of the reason for the negativity from the PC gamers towards the Xbox release.. a sense of ownership or possessiveness, perhaps, not to mention your well-made points about the PC development. However, when I expected just the opposite from one of the most prominent voices about the game, the attitude I heard towards the X1 and console gamers in the Lave Radio episodes I listened to was dismissive, elitist, and condescending. Your response here painted all console gamers with a very broad brush, and that, to me, is grossly unfair. You ended your post with a juvenile "Once you can come up with better" challenge. I am surprised, and disappointed.

I am surprised that you care, even the slightest bit, about one single console gamer thinks of your podcast. I am surprised that, by issuing your "if you can do better, you can do it," statement, that you seem to think your podcast is beyond reproach or criticism. Most of all, I am disappointed that Lave Radio has such a low opinion of the X1 and console gamers.

Those commercials are HANDS DOWN my FAVORITE part of the programs! lol! :D I always thought it was cool that they decided to simulate a typical commercial radio program complete with advertisers and sponsors, and best of all! Right out of the Elite Dangerous Universe! :) Some of those bits are priceless!

And I also wanted to take this opportunity to respond publicly to the previous critique I had posted here on the forums last night (actually... very early this morning) regarding some of the aspects of the LAVE RADIO show I felt wasn't working and needed some tweaking.

I awoke this morning to some what could only be described as PM HATE MAIL over some of what I had posted about last night's episode. Since I AM NOT going to dignify any of those PMs with a personal response via that route (FYI Haters... Your messages went straight into the bit bucket largely unread, and your IDs straight onto my IGNORE LIST!) I don't appreciate being insulted and ridiculed for offering some constructive criticism regarding a creative endeavor I feel could be made better in certain areas! Just like the game itself, there is a small but very vocal/socially active group of fans that are FAR TOO emotionally attached to this game and apparently to Lave Radio to be considered healthy!

Just like the game, I wouldn't be bothering to post some suggestions for improvements to the LAVE show if I didn't enjoy listening to the show every week! If I hated the program as I have now been accused of I wouldn't bother saying ANYTHING! I would just delete it from my iPOD's Podcast subscriptions and move on, just like if I really HATED Elite D, I would uninstall it from my XB1 and delete my account on this forum at the same time!

As for the LAVE Show... I find it a very entertaining podcast, and really fun to hear other player's opinions on specific features, ships, developer posts, progress reports etc. etc.

I guess my biggest NIT with LAVE Radio, and one that was on full display on last night's show was them hi-jacking their own topics of discussion, to such a degree that on several occasions the news they were suppose to be revealing, or the user question directed at someone from FD or the ED development team gets totally glossed over and NEVER ANSWERED, REVEALED, or what have you!

I wish the guys on the show would be mindful of this tendency and realize how frustrating those situations are for those of us who do not follow all the minutia online like they might do, and we honestly DON'T KNOW the latest news about the game, or when a user's question makes it all the way to being asked on the show, for god sakes! Don't throw an ill timed zinger (joke) into the conversation just as one of the FD guys is about to answer that question, the entire panel erupts in laughter, that proceeds to pull the entire conversation off topic, and the next thing you know, the segment is out of time, the FD guys make their exit and the user question NEVER GETS ANSWERED!

That actually happened just like I just described it on the show last night! That was the focus of my criticism that resulted in the HATE PMs greeting me this morning when i got up.

So there ya go! LAY OFF says I! Lay Off Ye Fanboys of the Realm!

The guys on the LAVE show sound like good guys! A group I wouldn't mind enjoying a pint with given the opportunity! For one thing, they don't take themselves too seriously! Something that small but very rabid segment of fans should try applying to their own personal agenda sometime! Then they wouldn't come off to those new to the game as total Traceys and hitting a new Elite player or forum account holder in the face with confirmation of the Elite Dangerous community stereotype.

My two cents on the subject! And two cents that I really hope the majority reading this post will sense as 100% sincere and well intentioned.

Thank you...And good night! :)

Heya, I think it's fair to admit that we can and do get de-railed occasionally. I also know though that we can't press FD too hard for answers since if we do, they just wont come back. FD have a VERY tight remit as to what they can and can't say.

So for example we asked if the USS' can be solved. The answer was 'Yes'. We also asked about the new ship they announced (Federal Gun Ship) and if you listened to the show you'd have heard FD saying, we can't say that etc. We then asked about what it looked like, and Ed joked that it looked like a police phone box :)

We could go all Paxman and say, but what does it LOOK like again and again, but there's no point, they can't tell us...

I am glad that you enjoy most of the show and hope the hate mail wasn't too bad

Ben

Hey Ben!

Thanks for offering up things from your perspective. I appreciate what you guys are doing, and do find "most" of what you do every week to be right up my street and entertaining as well as informative. Otherwise, as I said earlier, I wouldn't be listening every week! ;)

I also understand that you guys have to tread lightly in terms of "pressing" the FD guys for answers. I know first hand the wrath that can befall the well meaning industry bloke, who lets something "slip" totally innocently, by accident, and then find themselves in some serious hot water over NDA related "issues". I am sure those guys are dying to give you guys, and through you guys, out to us guys, more info about whatever is cooking over there in the FD kitchens at any given time.

You know the other thing I think your show is great at doing? Providing a conduit for BETTER communication with the community. I know that Zac is apparently in charge of all things ED community, but if I were on your panel, I would try to find some polite way to get in his face a bit about that! Specifically as it relates to the current state of the XB1 Beta Test cycle.

Since you guys are playing the XB1 version, you must be observing the same things I am. The fact that after the first week or so the Preview thing launched, FD more or less just got up and left the room, and they haven't really been back ever since! At least that is the impression I get these days.

Just look at the bug reporting forum on any given day. Many days in a row can go by without a single new response from even a 1st Tier FD person. Leave alone a post in there by a senior development member, or someone like Zac. Sitting down with the community and filling everyone in on what is going on with that version of the game.

Why there hasn't been an update to the June 26th build after all this time. (Incredibly unusual and totally out of character for a beta test cycle where the build in question has so many issues)

Anyway... I am sure you get where I am coming from right? I would like to ask you guys, to actually put that to the FD guys the next time you have them on your show. Especially if by airtime next week, we have still not seen a new XB1 build! Then such a question would be totally appropriate! And I don't think any of you guys would be out of line for pressing them on that particularly sore spot with pretty much everyone I know personally who is actively involved in testing the XB1 version!

Okay then... I think I have talked your ear off enough for one thread! :)

Thanks again for jumping into the fray! Glad that I didn't tick you guys off too much with my "opinions". And no... The HATE MAIL wasn't too much for me to handle. I've had much worse. But I dealt with this bundle in exactly the same way I deal with any unsolicited, and NASTY junk mail, that greets me before I have had my morning coffee! lol!

Into the bit bucket with the nasty message, and onto the ole Ignore List for the author! lol! It is a technique I developed back in the first year of the internet, once it became clear that people could be real obnoxious jerks on Bulletin Boards and later, on message forums when their real name was not required. ;)

Keep up the good work Ben! Looking forward to your guys' next show! :D

[]Rick.

I'd like to congratulate you on the most masterfully crafted post I have seen in three years of frequenting these forums. That must have taken you quite some time to write and if it didn't, you madam are very very good and practised at what you do.

Lave Radio
Hi folks. In general we don't get out of our community thread very much, so people in this forum may not have heard of us as those are the rules related to posting about what we do. We've been following the development of Elite Dangerous since March 2013 We're very fortunate to have a team of dedicated folk working on the podcast and the other community efforts we work on.

We're very open to constructive criticism and completely accept we're not the show for everyone. Nobody is. We give up a lot of free time and are very privileged to have the support of the game developers who listen and occasionally drop by. We've interviewed all of the official writers, produced audio dramas, adverts and more.

We also try to help other creative and charitable efforts associated with the Elite Dangerous Community, such as Fozza's Movember spaceplane back in 2013, the charity raffle at Lavecon, shout outs to other community projects, etc.

If you want to offer advice on things you'd like to see improved, tweaked or otherwise, our thread's in the community area and our email is info@laveradio.com We welcome genuine feedback.

Hello!

I'm actually part of the Lave Radio crew also *waves* - I happen to be an avid console gamer too. I have Elite on my Xbox One and I've been playing it, its taking me some time to get used to the controller set-up as I never used an 360 one with my PC, but I'm getting there.

I have no issues with the XB1 version, nor XB1 players. Because I am one. Perhaps sometimes people's personal gaming platform preferences creep into conversation in a non-constructive way, but lets be honest, this happens all the time in all gaming circles across the internet. Constantly. That doesn't mean I think its acceptable, I'm recognising that it is common and we have certainly been guilty of letting personal bias seep in to the podcast.

However, we are all volunteers, not professional presenters. We are fans and do this in our spare time, such as it is. Please give us the benefit of the doubt when this sort of thing is mentioned, by all means call us on it, discuss it, point it out; but there is no need to be angered by our well meaning, frequently rambling chats that we have about a game that we all love (no matter the platform) that we record and put out there hoping to entertain. Open a dialogue with us, as I hope we have done here. Don't just shout us down without giving us a chance to make this a more cohesive community.

Cheers,
Lisa

I think we've said on multiple occasions that adding more platforms can only be a good thing for Elite. I know I stand by it (Linux and PS4 anyone?) :)

Thank you for the compliment, although I am curious as to why you chose to pair it with an insult. I don't recall having revealed my gender in any posts, yet you refer to me as "madam." Do you feel that a term for a female is somehow derogatory?

If you thought the post was so "masterfully crafted," why refer to it as "stuff?" Were you trying to be dismissive?

In regards to being good at what I do, could you explain your logic? It's just a forum post, and a direct answer to a previous post. It was long, yes, but there was a lot to address. What does a forum post reveal about what I do?

I'm sure the people at Lave Radio work very hard, and I especially appreciate Lave Radio's charitable contributions. However, you and some other (but most certainly not all) Lave Radio personnel have responded to dispassionate and legitimate criticism with insults and childishness. You mentioned in your post that you welcome genuine feedback. What is it about my criticism that you do not find genuine? Is it simply that you don't agree with it?
