Don't need a detailed surface scanner??

Anyone else notice that it's unnecessary to have a surface scanner??? I definitely do not have one fitted and I'm able to scan stars, planets, etc... without one. Bug? Or did I miss something?

If you have a surface scanner:

1. You get more information about the planet in the system map (including the percentages of all materials you can find with an SRV on the surface)
2. You get more money for the scans of all planets..

If you go exploring and you want it to be profitable, they're important.

You get more money if you use the detailed scanner.
Also the detailed scanner will reveal what kind and what percentage of materials you can find on certain planets.

I hope FD will eventually implement a more sophisticated scanner model.
The scan mechanism in ED is a very important one and it deserves to become more interesting.

Aaaaach, i was bested. :)

It's about the detail of the scan, there are 3 types numbered 1-3. I believe that the detailed scanner gives the type 3 scans.

I actually don't use a DSS.

If you go exploring without a DSS then it is like deliberately crippling yourself. You're only going to make half the credits you would otherwise make.

Yes, the DSS DOUBLES the value of body scans. So it takes less time to rank up your exploration rank.

Yeah but that's the thing. I'm an incredibly lazy dude & I never actually scan individual bodies. [noob]

Ooh it's definitely going to take you sometime to reach Elite in exploration. I know you like to reset your save every now and again. But you must want to get to Elite in one of the three at some point.

Trade is the easiest, exploration is the hardest and combat the most fun (just my opinion).

I always bring a DSS because it would have earned its cost back after scanning a few HMC worlds.

There is another reason to me not using a DSS.

If I want to take a particularly long journey, spanning many thousands of lightyears travelling in economic mode, then I'd want to take two AFMUs, so that they can repair each other should the need arise.

A Cobra Mk III has six slots in the internals. If I want to maintain shielding & an SRV bay, then the DSS has to go. Luckily, I'm really not fussed about profits made. As for materials? A bit of intuition can substitute, trust me.

The best, most compelling reason for using a DSS is two words: Opportunity Cost.

Every time you're within "surface scanning" range of an object you have an opportunity (to increase your Explorer Rank)...how much you make of that opportunity is up to you. No one is selling exploration data trying to get rich, so throw money out the window right there, you're basically doing it for the Exploration Rank, right? (If you ARE trying to get rich, you could do worse than "investing" time in gaining exploration rank, because you can get some really tasty passenger missions at high Exploration Rank) In order to make the most rank for your time spent scanning you NEED to use a DSS. I generally don't even bother with any surface scans at all unless I have one. That said, since I started playing again I've tripled my total number of Level 2 scans, but that was accidental, really...

In short, if you're an Explorer you already want one, right?
If you're not an Explorer but you're doing surface scanning anyway, you NEED one even more. (Because using one will hasten the point where you NEVER HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN, savvy?)
If you're not an Explorer and you're not surface scanning why are you still reading this?
